Book Description

Provide professionally sound and principled therapy based on the truth of God

Christians are faced with the same range of problems as everyone else. However, Christian therapists understand deeply the unique issues involved with their therapy. The Christian Therapist’s Notebook is a single source for innovative, user-friendly techniques for connecting the everyday world of the client with Christian principles and Scripture. This creative, timesaving guide assists therapists in helping clients achieve therapy goals through professionally sound and principled exercises while always maintaining a positive, supportive connection with Christian beliefs. Helpful features include Scripture references relevant to common problems, case studies, vignettes, professional resource lists, client resource lists, in-session exercises, homework exercises, and handouts.

The Christian Therapist’s Notebook bases its success on three foundations: the truth of scripture; the centrality of Christ; and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The book’s three sections include individuals, couples and families, and children and adolescents. Each chapter focuses on a single exercise to address an important issue that may be affecting the client. Chapters provide a guiding Scripture quote, an objective, rationale for use, clear and specific instructions, suggestions for a follow-up, a vignette illustrating the exercise’s success, contraindications, extensive resources, and related Scriptures.

The Christian Therapist’s Notebook exercises include:
  • “A New Creation,” which uses a Christogram to personalize the Biblical promises and truths of the spiritual transformation
  • “Snapshots,” which reveals repetitive behavior patterns in relationships
  • “Core Connections,” which helps the client explore the organization of relational core connections to other people as well as to God
  • “Temptation Judo,” which explores the connection between temptation and needs while uncovering God’s promise of escape
  • “Broken Mirrors,” which identifies unresolved issues affecting self-image and moves the client to a personal relationship with God
  • “The Book of My Life,” which helps identify situations and people that have had an impact on clients, while helping them to acknowledge that God has a plan for them
  • “Tearing Down Strongholds,” which helps take the client through the process of repentance
  • “It Was Wrong,” which helps abuse victims deal with pain and frustration
  • “Bowing Down,” which helps to restore a healthy relationship
  • “Panic Breaker,” which helps get to the root of client fears
  • “Parenting after Divorce”
  • “Self-esteem,” which helps children with self-concept
  • and many, many more!

The Christian Therapist’s Notebook is the answer for practicing therapists, counselors, interns, pastors, educators, and students searching for activities for client therapy based upon the truth of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, October 14, 2007
This review is from: Christian Therapist's Notebook: Homework, Handouts, and Activities for Use in Christian Counseling (Paperback)
This workbook is divided into three sections, one for individuals, one for couples and families and one for children and adolescents. Each one of the sections include homework assignments, handouts and suggested activities. The focus of the book is to answer the question of what do you do when the door closes and you have to deal with the practical issue of effective therapy. In the Christian Therapist paradigm you also have to deal with you can connect this person back to God. The purpose statement of the book is very clear - to provide Christian therapists a way to be passionately Christian and still remain clinically professional.

The information provided is very comprehensive. For each exercise there is a guiding scripture, objective, rational for use, instructions, vignette, suggestions for follow-up, contraindications, resources for professionals, resources for clients, and related scriptures. All of the activities are strongly Christian and Bible based. This fact alone makes it an excellent resource for any church pastor or other leader who is counseling in a church setting. It is also excellent for any therapist working with a client with a background in the Christian church. The exercises are honest and point out in the contraindications when it would not be appropriate. When an exercise makes presumptions as to the client's spiritual level or orientation the contraindications spell it out in the contraindications section.

The Christian Therapist's Notebook is an excellent resource for the Christian Therapist working with Christian clients and highly recommended for that purpose. The exercises are on target and integrate standard therapeutic principles into a Christian environment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for professional counselors, January 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Christian Therapist's Notebook: Homework, Handouts, and Activities for Use in Christian Counseling (Paperback)
I am a licensed Christian counselor. Upon ordering this book, I was excited by the description and delighted to possibly get some new ideas for working with my clients. I am returning this book after being sorely disappointed after looking through the book. The spiritual pieces are good and biblical references sound, but the handouts/exercises are extremely elementary. This book might be more suitable for a new graduate or someone who is just beginning to work with clients. The handouts were also very dark, so making legible copies would be almost impossible. The handouts were something I could easily create with MS Word. Basically, if you are new to the counseling field, this book "may" be helpful to you. But if you are a seasoned therapist looking for new ideas and quality homework/handout assignments, this book is not for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Henry hits a home run! Easy to use, very practical, great tool., June 5, 2007
This review is from: Christian Therapist's Notebook: Homework, Handouts, and Activities for Use in Christian Counseling (Paperback)
Dr. Henry and his co-authors have put together a biblically solid, therapeutically beneficial tool in an easy to use, practical book. It is also written with a touch of humor (which is sorely lacking in most professional books), which benefits both client and therapist. I have already used six of the exercises with excellent results.

This book covers a large variety of issues such as depression, anxiety, addictions, relationship issues, etc... for adults, couples and adolescents. I really appreciate the ease of use. It is very practical; just pick a subject and you will quickly find a well thought out, biblically sound and psychologically helpful tool to employ. I must say this is the most useful therapeutic book I own. Its total focus is on providing us with tools/interventions/assignments to help our clients.

I only wish it was in tab form because I will wear it out soon by making so many copies of the exercises!
