Christian use of Emotional Power, June 21, 2011
This review is from: The Christian Use of Emotional Power (Hardcover)
I am about 1/3 through this book. There is so much meat in this book. It makes so much sense and opens my eyes to a whole new light about anger, worry, anxiety, and the power we have from the Holy Spirit to control these. So scripturally based. It is an easy read but, you need to read it slow to digest all the insight it shares.
A counselor from church is letting me borrow it for as long as i like, and i may just have to buy my own copy!

The Christian Use of Emotional Power, July 26, 2007
This review is from: The Christian Use of Emotional Power (Hardcover)
Should we suppress anger? Repress hateful thoughts? Deny periods of depression? Can worry ever solve our problems? Must one always be humble and self-deprecating in order to follow the Ways of Christ? This informative book gives intelligent and reasuring answers to questions like these, and, in so doing, provides a thorough-going commentary on human emotions from a biblical perspective.
Emotions are aroused when we make a value judgement. Fear, worry, anxiety, even depression, when channeled constructively, can have productive outlets. Anger should be neither repressed, but instead can be expressed creatively, contends the author. Jesus Himself became angry on occasions. Our anger, too, can be justified and fruitful if it is controlled, unselfish, and directed against wrongful deeds, rather than against persons.
Beginning with a discussion of the origins of emotions and the concept of "mind-set" (the attitude, "Don't bother me with facts, my mind is made up!"), the book goes on to show convincingly that through reading Scriptures and letting the Holy Spirit work in our lives, we can abandon old thought patterns and strengthen our minds to begin thinking freely. A positive self-image is of primary importance in providing a strong foundation for loving others and, ultimately, for increasing our love of God. It is through rebirth in Christ that we can learn to control and deal effectively with our emotions.
