Book Description

April 17, 2006
Since the Vietnam era, there has arisen, in America and the whole of Western society, a way of thinking that argues against all war. Consequently, a book discussing the question of a Christian's participation in war and other related issues in light of this emerging consensus seems not just appropriate but necessary. In an environment where war is, by definition, immoral, it is difficult for "good," "decent" folks to think positively about war-fighting. This book is an effort to correct such thinking and to instruct the interested reader as to what the Bible actually says about this most important subject. In addition to the war issue, the author deals with the question of nuclear weapons, the United Nations, the war on terror and how it relates to the war in Iraq, and capital punishment. The author's examination of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and how it relates to this subject of war is especially interesting.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The author has written a thoughtful examination of modern Just War theory from the standpoint of one who believes everything a Christian participates in must be authorized by what is taught in the Bible. He clearly challenges the anti-war mentality that pervades modern society, but does so without falling into the trap of trying to defend everything that is done in war. He believes that war is a moral enterprise that must be judged by the principles of Justice and Righteousness. Especially challenging to the pacifists, this book will challenge you no matter what position you take on this most important subject.

About the Author

Between 1962 and 1966, Allan Turner served in the U.S. Air Force as an air policeman, eighteen months of which were spent in Okinawa, Japan. He was a patrol deputy for a short time, then a detective, with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida. After leaving the Sheriff’s Office, he was a private investigator, security consultant, and polygraph examiner for a number of years. During this time, he served his local church as a deacon and Bible class teacher. In 1976, he started preaching part-time for several churches in the Tampa area. Then in 1981, he began preaching full-time in Louisville, Kentucky. Since that time, he has preached the gospel in fourteen states, Great Britain, India, and Kenya, East Africa, living in Kenya for four and a half years. Other than this, he has preached regularly for churches in North Carolina and Ohio.

During the past twenty-five years, Allan has written and edited church bulletins on a wide variety of subjects. He has also written for most of the religious papers associated with what he considers to be conservative churches of Christ. For several years he edited and regularly wrote for Justice Magazine, a publication of the Committee for Justice in Government, an organization that was interested in ethics in the public square, along with various social and church-state issues. He presently lives and works in Corinth, Mississippi, where he continues to preach and teach some for the local church of which he is a member. His principle interest involves researching, writing, and publishing religious material on a variety of subjects. He is supported in this effort by several friends and fellow Christians who are interested in his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Christian And War, June 13, 2006
This review is from: The Christian & War (Paperback)
The "war question" was thrust into the minds of many when they were but babes in Christ. As young men with an abject dearth of information and prejudicial advice given them, they quickly found themselves forced to make a conscience decision...a choice that in all probability was an uneasy and unsatisfying one. Either patriotism or Christianity seemed to be the only options. Are they disjoint and mutually exclusive? They are not and Allan Turner explains why. He does this by explaining how one can be a patriot without doing so blindly and be a Christian without being a pacifist. In his recent publication, The Christian And War, he explores in depth the alleged dichotomy between being a patriot and being a Christian. Turner's rich background of being in the military, being a policeman and above all an astute Bible student allows him a perspective that is quite unique. You will be challenged, enlightened and probably surprised at the author's candid and common sense solution to this question. One that has baffled the ripest of scholar's who have tried and failed to grasp the "war question". It is my judgment that you will find his book refreshing and interesting. In that spirit I heartily commend it to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely challanges your thinking on this subject!, June 2, 2006
This review is from: The Christian & War (Paperback)
As I began reading this book I knew very quickly that I would be challenged to look at the subject of war in ways that I hadn't thought of before. The author puts forth many questions and then seeks to explain them with biblical reason. It definitely made me think...and I'm still thinking. A must read!
