This book examines the Christian heritage of America throughout its history, surveying the founding fathers fight to establish a free society, the impact of the Great Awakening up through the Civil War, and the slow decline of Christianitys influence since the end of World War II. The author also presents some thoughts on how our modern-day culture can be turned back toward a reliance on God and the Christian principles of the Bible.

More About the Author

John Howard returned from World War II service in the First Infantry Division with two silver stars, two purple hearts and a commitment to use his career to help spread understanding of the great blessings of America's free society which from its beginnings was inspired and shaped by the teachings of Christianity. He had previously had three years in college and had been deeply concerned by the growing political ferment of radical organizations working to destroy the American government, its economic system and its religiously- and family-centered society. He chose to prepare himself for college administration. At age 29, he became president of a small experimental college. In 1955 he was named Executive Vice Chairman of President Eisenhower's Committee of Government Contracts overseeing its work of opening jobs to qualified minority applicants. The committee achieved substantial success during President Eisenhower's Administration. In 1960, John was called to be president of Rockford College, which was already committed to relocating. President Kennedy had decided to provide extensive subsidies for colleges. John and the Trustees decided to use no federal funds for the new campus. One reason was the ever-expanding federal funding would make education a political captive, with mounting pressure to support whichever political candidates promised the largest additional government funding. The new campus was built with private funds. In 1976, John resigned as President of Rockford College to found and operate a think tank in order to study and make known the cultural forces destroying America's free society. An offshoot of that think tank, The Howard Center, where John still works, writing books and lecturing, conceived and operates the World Congress of Families which conducts periodic Congresses with thirty-one pro-family organizations of many nations as partners participating in the planning. John and his wife Jan have four children and nine grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christianity: Lifeblood of America's Free Society, June 28, 2009
This review is from: Christianity: Lifeblood of America's Free Society (Paperback)
(Letter sent to Dr. Howard)
Dear Dr. Howard:

Your treatise on Christianity as the foundation of America's values is magnificent...

Most real students of American history will probably define your work as a pleasant easy read bringing together Christianity and America's emergence as a democracy. But to me, and many other concerned citizens, your book is much more. You defined for me why our nation is so unique: why so fragile.

Your treatise is so compelling I have read and re-read phrases, sentences, paragraphs, chapters and the entire book. I have done this in recent years only with the Bible, Pastor Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life", the Qur'an and a limited number of legal related documents/opinions.

I firmly believe your book should be required reading for every American. Your work is so basic to the future of our nation. You define the individuals, values and American spirit that made our nation excel. You examine America's "still" unique values identified in Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America". You define why our nation's citizens are morally incapable of recognizing right from wrong.

Sir, you after your wonderful military service to our nation, continue to serve and set an example for all Americans. I really cannot find adequate words to express my gratitude and thanks to you. Reading "Christianity: Lifeblood of America's Free Society" defined in explicit principles/examples my most fundamental beliefs in America.

Very Respectfully, My Sincere Thanks, Best Wishes and Prayers,

Wevley William Shea
