Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8ATeenaged amateur sleuths Christie and her roommates, Vicky and Maggie, are off on another adventure. They have befriended Blair Chan, a recent immigrant from China, who is new at The Cabot School. Suddenly Blair drops out of school and the girls are worried about her. Amid the celebration of the Chinese New Year in Boston's Chinatown, Christie and Company discover that Blair, her recently widowed mother, and baby brother are being threatened with deportation by criminals who want the proceeds of her father's life insurance. Of course the girls develop a complicated plan to rescue their friend and, of course, there is a slip that endangers Christie and Vicky. This is a fast-paced mystery whose main appeal is the friendship among the main characters. The plot develops quickly and with some believability. A subplot involves hero-worship of an older, untrustworthy girl and Christie's moral dilemma about covering up her friend's sneaking out of the house. Much attention is paid to fashion, mother-daughter conflicts, light romance, Chinese culture, and the importance of family. For readers who want an updated Nancy Drew, this is just the ticket.AAnne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library
