3.0 out of 5 stars It will be interesting to see....
One thing people often neglect to consider is that Christina Aguilera was not signed to create art. Before you explode on me hear me out. If you look at her record, she wrote none of it. CA was signed to sing an already written script that has proven itself profitable by people with half her talent and comeliness. This record is product just as much the Clearasil...

5.0 out of 5 stars No Britney...Thank God!, November 5, 1999
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
Don't write Ms. Aguilera off as the next Britney Spears. Unlike Britney's babyish and mechanical voice, Christina sounds soulful and powerful. (NOTE: Someone said that Christina herself was the only one making the Mariah/Whitney comparisions...not true. Christina has said that both singers are influences, but SonicNet, MTV, and many others have compared her voice to them.) Here's my little review:

1. GENIE IN A BOTTLE: A cool dance track. It sounds MUCH better on stereo than on the radio, though. It doesn't showcase her singing as much as the other songs, but is still a good song, though nowhere near the best on the album.

2. WHAT A GIRL WANTS: This one's got more of an R&B feel, which is cool. I also love the meaning of this one. Plus, the remix is really cool, and should be another hit once it comes out.

3. I TURN TO YOU: Oh. My. Gawd. How can you listen to this, then call her a one-hit wonder? That part at the end where she holds that long note...incredible. I'd like to see Britney TRY to do that.

4. SO EMOTIONAL: This is one of my favorites. It's got this cool bluesy feel but is danceable. I also love the lyric "It's either black or white, that's right. We're making love while we're in a fight." That basically sums up life.

5. COME ON OVER: Another great one. It's fun to dance to, but she sounds great even on fast songs. Her voice just has so much substance, so much soul.

6. REFLECTION: Christina scores another wonderful ballad. This one's got a great message that I really can relate to, and Ms. Aguilera's voice adds so much more to it. Very powerful, very wonderful. As far as ballads go, only "I Turn To You" (by Christina), "I Wanna Love You Forever" by Jessica Simpson, and "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" by BSB can possibly compete with this one.

7. LOVE FOR ALL SEASONS: A fun, dancable song. And her voice sounds great. As always. I especially like "I feel like a little girl who wants to know can you come out and play"

8. SOMEBODY'S SOMEBODY: Very cool. It's got that R&B feel to it, but still has that special something that makes Christina Aguilera's music differant than everyone elses's. It's the perfect song to listen to when you want a girlfriend or boyfriend.

9. WHEN YOU PUT YOUR HANDS ON ME: Yet another hit! Is there anything this girl cannot do? She goes really high on this one, which I doubt that other female pop singer can do...I won't mention any names.

10. BLESSED: A sweet song. Uh, that's all I can say about it.

11. LOVE WILL FIND A WAY: Another great dance song you can just groove, too, but is still enjoyable when you feel like chilling.

12. OBVIOUS: A beautiful ballad, though not her best, it still is one of the best I've heard. She ends a FANTASTIC album with three words: Isn't it obvious? Isn't it obvious that she's headed somewhere?

4.0 out of 5 stars Super talented - needs better material to match her voice, May 8, 2000
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
The dilemma Christina Aguilera will have to deal with in the early years of her career will be the constant comparisons to teeny-bop acts like Britney Spears and NSync. What a shame, because this girl is already miles ahead and can sing with the best of them! She has sung with blues legend B.B. King and will soon duet with Etta James, which shows her maturity! If you checked out her live rendition of "At Last" on VH1's "Men Strike Back", you know what I mean.

Her debut CD shows us a glimmer of the potential superstar that she is already becoming. Forget "Genie In A Bottle" and "What A Girl Wants" and jump directly to "Love For All Seasons", "Blessed" and "Obvious". These songs show her more mature side, while the more popluar songs were put on there for the younger crowd (flocking to the record stores!). "So Emotional" and "Somebody's Somebody" are also great uptempo tracks that will probably go unnoticed.

It must be difficult for an artist as talented as Aguilera to debut, as you must balance the importance of the audience you are needing to target in order to sell albums while still be true to your own talent and capabilities. I think Christina and her label did the best they could to balance the two, but it is obvious that she is far better than this album depicts. Its understandable that her debut CD was littered with some bubblegum ditties to attract a younger audience, but watch her grow on her next album. That will be the true sign of the artist that she will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christina's superb album is EXACTLY what a girl wants!, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
At first glance, Christina Aguilera seems much like the other bazillion bubblegum pop stars out there...namely, Britney Spears. But after purchasing this great CD, I realized that she is a truly gifted singer that really cares about what she does. There are a total of 12 songs on this album, all of them wonderful.

1) Genie In A Bottle- Christina's first smash hit, this song is smooth, sexy, and perfect for hanging out.

2) What A Girl Wants- another tune that topped the charts a few short months ago. This song is energetic, peppy, and includes a cool part not played on the radio.

3) I Turn To You- a beautiful song that is directed more toward a parent then a boyfriend/girlfriend. Christina really shows off her great voice in this one (that long note that she holds in the end is incredible)!

4) So Emotional- a slower, more relaxed track. Very nice!

5) Come On Over (All I Want Is You)- a really cool, fast song that makes you get up and dance! This track is one of my favorites. I wonder why it was never a hit on the radio...

6) Reflection- Who could ever listen to this amazing song and then call Christina a cheesy pop artist? This gorgeous, soulful ballad showcases Aguilera's wonderful voice. If you have not heard this song yet in the Disney movie, "Mulan," then I suggest that you listen to it. You'll be impressed!

7) Love For All Seasons- a very pretty song, but beware the digital ending!

8) Somebody's Somebody- a great song. It is very catchy, so don't blame me when you start clapping your hands and tapping your feet to the beat!

9) When You Put Your Hands On Me- a sophisticated, sexy song. Don't worry, parents, it's clean.

10) Blessed- an okay song, but you can't really appreciate the beauty of Christina's voice here.

11) Love Will Find A Way- another really catchy song. After hearing it once, this tune was stuck in my head all day (not that that's a bad thing...)!

12) Obvious- a pretty song, but it may be considered a "filler" to some...it's nice anyway!

Well, there you have it. Christina Aguilera is quite talented, and doesn't deserve to be labeled as just another pop singer. She sings with all of her heart and soul, and her fantastic voice reflects that. I highly recommend Christina's self-titled debut album to any true music lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT a bubblegum pop album!, December 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
So many of the previous reviews are way off base. If you've listened to the first single, "Genie In A Bottle," it's easy to write this girl off as another passing bubblegum singer. Truth is, her album is more along the lines of the pop/R&B music that Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are famous for. Yes folks, this girl CAN sing, and NO, this album is nothing like that of Britney Spears.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best debut albums!, June 24, 2006
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
Christina...how should I describe her voice? It's not like "pipes" of Mariah Carey that can belt 5 octaves, but its not really a big voice like Whiteny Houston. It's more like both actually. The vocal range is probably 2-3 octaves, but it has the power to sustain it for a period of time. Here's a breakdown of each song.

GENIE IN A BOTTLE: It's a sexy song. Very seductive, it was Aguilera's first single and reached #1. It's funky base, and sassy lyrics are a subject of a good song. Most of these types of songs are usually lame, but this one is different, it has a "charm" to it. 9/10.

WHAT A GIRL WANTS: Thank you, thank you, thank you. That's what Christina is talking about. And guess what I wanna say? Thank you, thank you, thank you BACK AT HER!!! It's a good song, and considered one of her signatures. Its a midtempo song (usually midtempo songs aren't great, but this one is). This was her 2nd single, and it also reached #1. 10/10.

I TURN TO YOU: Wow 3 hits in a row that are great! This single reached #3. It's a slow ballad, and this is where Christina is showing her vocals. She's showing that she is not just a pop queen, but also a RnB soul singer. It's a fabulous song, there aren't any flaws. 10/10.

SO EMOTIONAL: Ok this is one of the songs in which I meant sexy+seductive+sassy = not so good. She goes a little over with the lyrics, and this is probably one of the least quality tracks on this album. However, her set of vocals are still on display for some of the songs, so its bearable. 5/10.

COME ON OVER: OH YEAH! A FANTASTIC SONG! This is another signature of hers. Its probably one of my favorite Christina songs of all time. It's very hip, jumpy, exciting, just a great dance track. It's no wonder this, as a fourth single, shot up to #1 in no time! 10/10.

REFLECTION: Familiar? Have you seen Mulan? Yeah, that's where you'll hear it. An RnB display again, and Christina doesn't fail us. It's a great song, simply gorgeous. It's one of the best on the tracks. 10/10.

lOVE FOR ALL SEASONS: Another midtempo song that's just mediocre. It works either way. The song gets boring after a while, but before the "a while", it's something that's really not that bad. 7.5/10.

SOMEBODY'S SOMEBODY: Midtempo again. Another one of those seductive songs that don't work. This one does have a bit of charm in it, but really it feels repetitive. The vocals aren't bad, its just the...lyrics. 6/10

WHEN YOU PUT YOUR HANDS ON ME: Classic sexy lame-o. Please, this song just is very hideous. I don't like it all, it's just something crappy. I'm sorry Xtina, this is NOT a good song. 3/10.

BLESSED: She's blessed, and we should be too for hearing this great song! Ballads are no problem when it comes to Christina, and she's 3/3 on awesome ballads! Listen to the lyrics, and you'll see the true meaning of the song. 10/10.

LOVE WILL FIND A WAY: Tempo is like "Come on Over". And this song isn't bad either. It doesn't have the same flair as Come On Over, but it's well constructed enough to be a good celebrating song. 8.5/10

OBVIOUS: This ballad almost didn't work (gasps!). Its weaker compared to her other 3 on this album, so really its not fair that this song was compared to 3 fantastic slow songs. If its by itself, its not that bad. 6/10.

TOTAL: 96/120 or 80%, which is a solid 4 star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Aguilera, January 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
Christina Aguilera is a gifted singer plagued by mediocre material and an overproduced CD. The songs on her CD manage to stay afloat mainly due to her vocal quality, impressive for someone so young. Like most new pop singers, Aguilera proceeds to bow before the altar of Dianne Warren, the writer behind Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me" and LeAnn Rimes "How Do I Live". On "Turn To You", a ballad penned by Warren, Aguilera turns a rather ordinary-if not cliche-song into a vocal powerhouse. "What A Girl Wants" is a slightly jazzy, groovy number with Aguilera's soulful voice at full strength. Her big hit, "Genie In A Bottle" is rather a rather interesting song. Aguilera claims that the song speaks of self-respect but the words imply otherwise. In actuality, it is nothing more than fluff, as is most of Aguilera's record. I don't blame Christina. She is merely a pretty girl with a great voice caught in the middle of an industry hell-bent on selling records rather than making music. If she can find a niche for herself away from that of typical teenage stars, away from the paint-by-numbers formula so prevalent in today's music, she will definately be a name that lasts. She's definitely got the voice. All she needs is the material.

5.0 out of 5 stars She Proved Me Wrong!, February 3, 2000
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
I wasn't expecting much from her because of the single "Genie In A Bottle" but once I really payed attention to the lyrics, I had to admit it had a cool theme. Every performance she gives out is so polished, she can sing AND dance at the same time, unlike SOME other female pop artists (and I won't mention any names.) Even though some of the songs on this album aren't that great, you can tell she has good taste for lyrics! Her next album is bound to be better, if you have ever seen her play the piano and sing the song "At Last" you'll just fall in love with her! It's so great to have a beautiful, talented artist in this business!

4.0 out of 5 stars This album shows her true-beginning-talent., August 17, 2006

This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
Christina debut album had definitely exceeded my expectations back then. It was not a sugary bubblegum pop filled album like that other Mouse-keteer, but an album with R&B songs mixed with a little pop and packed with a lot of soul! She had introduced us to a voice that has a lot of depth and showcased it extremely well for someone her age.

Christina has teamed up with some great songwriters (Diane Warren, etc...) and producers to bring us these catchy tunes and powerful inspirational ballads. "I Turn to You" is amazing, as well as "Reflection", which clearly shows the girl can sing. "What a Girl Wants", "Obvious," one of my favorites "Come on Over (All I Want is You)", and "Love Will Find a Way" are a little more upbeat, as well as "Genie in a Bottle", which will stay in your heads even after the songs are over. On all ballads Christina's voice plays center stage to show off her great range.

"Genie in a Bottle" had firmly established her as one of pop music brightest star. As of right now she has already proving her longevity in the music industry so whatever she wished for from the Genie had already been granted.

This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
She has been my soul companion in the night, in the car, in my room for as long as I could remember .... I bring this CD wherever I go ... I just could not get enough of her.

She is definitely my favourite pop star than anyone else. She has the voice of an angel, a voice that is so strong till I can fell it in my heart and soul.

And pretty obvious, her hit song I turn to you, proved to be my favourite amongst all her ballads. Though Diane Warren is a famous songwriter, she could not have done it better than from a teenage superstar like Christina.

And her No 1 hit song that brings her to the top, Genie in a Bottle will always be a sing along song for all. No matter you are a kid or an adult, you will know how to sing this song.

There are other songs that bring life to this album too. Her chart topping singles like What a girl wants and Come on Over that are the pop strength in this album.

All in all, this CD covers the ballads and the fast songs as well. You will never regret buying this album.

If you have nothing to buy this month, why not spending it on Christina's album. She will bring more warmth and cheers to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank The Stars Above For SOMEONE Who Can Sing!, December 13, 1999
By
This review is from: Christina Aguilera (Audio CD)
When I first heard "Genie In A Bottle" I instantly thought "Oh NO not ANOTHER Britney Spears!" Just as "Baby One More Time" is catchy so is "Genie..." But if you listen to the whole cd you see there is a lot more substance to Christina Aguilera than 10,000 Britneys could have, plus I like "Genie.." better. Her voice awestruck me and it doesn't deserve to be compared to Mariah's voice (from the last few years. I don't mean when she sang early on in her career) And yes she does have some sensual undertones in a few of the songs but nowdays who doesn't. Aguilera's voice should be the standing-out characteristic and plus you can relate to some of the lyrics. I think it is a good break-through album.
