2.0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about whole foods but were afraid to ask
I'm not a hardcore vegatarian but, I like vegtables just fine. Still this book was not as nearly as good as I was expecting. I have to drive an hour to a speciality organic grocery store to get anything for recipes in this cook book and still I'll only find about half the ingredients. The recipes do take alot of time. Time isn't really an issue for me when it comes to...

Christina is so great at what she does when it comes to cooking with whole foods. Her recipes in this book are easy and you can find the ingredients in any Whole Foods market. She really explains why it's so important to eat the right foods and why organic cooking is so much healthier. This book is wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, April 26, 2006

I kind of had my doubts about this book. My boyfriend and I have occasionally stopped by her show on PBS to mock her husband's guitar playing. Next time we might restrain ourselves - all the recipes we've tried from this book have been wonderful!

Last night I made the Tofu and Hiziki Croquettes and they were so delicious I was inspired to write a review. They were so delicious!

The recipes are not necessarily low fat - e.g. she recommends deep frying the croquettes (I pan fried them instead) - and some of her recipes are quite sweet - lots of mirin and brown rice syrup in some savory dishes. Nonetheless, her style of cooking is very appealing and imaginative. I like the asian influences as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding.., January 29, 2007
This review is from: Christina Cooks: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Whole Foods But Were Afraid to Ask (Paperback)
This is the best cookbook yet by Christina. Every single recipe I have tried thus far has been outstanding. I liked it so much I gave this book to several of my friends for the holidays. It is an excellent cookbook for persons just transitioning into macrobiotic cuisine, who are in good health as it is a very wide diet. Recipes are balanced and most of all delicious. I highly recommend it.

I've tried about a dozen of Christina's recipes and they've all turned out well. I always ask my husband (picky) to rate a new dish from 1-5 stars and so far he's given 4 or 5 stars to every dish we've tried. The only drawback to the recipes is that many call for a substantial number of ingredients or things I don't regularly have on hand, so I have to plan ahead if I'm preparing one of Christina's dishes.

This is an excellent resource for everyone who would like to upgrade to healthier cooking without the use of sugar and animal products including dairy. The book provides an intro that explains benefits of whole foods/vegan diet and is full of delicious recipes that would excite even sugar junkies or long-standing carnivores. Some of the ingredients may be unknown to mainstream American audience, but are generally easy to come by given proliferation of health food markets such as Whole Foods or Wild Oats. The book is also a great resource for those interested in macrobiotics. Followers of macrobiotic diet tend to have a rather restricted diet due to lack of imagination or too narrow interpretation of traditional macrobiotic teachings. This book will help them to get out that rut into a more exciting and flavorful realm.

I bought this as a gift for a former vegan; he loved the meals in it and appreciated the link to his past. Now, he cooks one dish a week from this book for his new wife, who never considered a no-meat diet could be good!
