Biography

American jazz trumpeter and composer Herbert 'Herb' Alpert was born in LA in 1935. After graduating from college he joined with producer Lou Adler and the pair wrote music for a number of performers, providing hits for Jan and Dean with "Baby Talk" and "Wonderful World" for Sam Cooke.

Alpert came to the fore in his own right when he formed the jazz, Latin, funk and easy listening group Herb Alpert… Read more in Amazon's Herb Alpert Store

Now what could be more festive than Christmas songs, horns, and a Latin-infused rhythm section? Not much, which is why Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass's Christmas Album is perfect for that kitschy cocktail party or for trimming the tree. As background music, this collection is perfect. Paying too close attention to it, however, is not advised. For instance, the vocals on "Christmas Song" would have sounded so much better had they been replaced by the timbre of Herb's trumpet. But that mistake aside, the staccato stylings of the Brass's arrangement adds a south-of-the-border flair to "Winter Wonderland" and turns "Jingle Bells" into a hyper-salsa. "Las Mañanitas" and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desirings" glow with a warm sentimental touch. As always, the interplay of the horns via melody lines and harmonies is first rate. --Steve Gdula

5.0 out of 5 stars Herp Alpert & the Tijuana Brass Christmas Album, November 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Album (Audio CD)
My parents have this great LP, and I think they bought it new in 1966. Our family has listened to it ever since I can remember (I was born in early 1970's). This CD would be great for any Christmas party. The music and lyrics are similar to those in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but with a Christmas twist. "The Bell that Couldn't Jingle" is my favorite, and reminds me of Christmas with my brothers and parents. This is a great non-traditional Christmas CD for those of us who like things a little different.

I've been a fan of Herb Alpert since I was about 10 years old (I'm 43 now). I first bought the Christmas Album in 1969 and promptly wore it out. This album brings back fantastic memories of my childhood in the 60's and is still relevant today. Of particular mention are Herb's version of "Winter Wonderland", which is so hot it melts Parson Brown, and "Jingle Bell Rock" with the stripper coda reminiscent of David Rose. If you wanna remember Christmases of the mid to late 60's, buy this album. There were a lot of imitators back then, but Alpert stands the test of time!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Christmas albums!, November 17, 2003
This review is from: Christmas Album (Audio CD)
I remember listening to this every night as a kid when I went to sleep near Christmas time. The songs seeped into my subconcious. Now as an adult I can't find it anywhere. $120 secondhand on Amazon?? No wonder the music industry is losing money. They keep pumping out endless loops of junk while a possible good seller goes by the wayside. They could re-issue this one, sell it for 10.99 and make a mint! Heck, I'd buy at least 4 myself and give them as gifts.
