5.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat old-time country Christmas
This budget release contains absolutely no information about when the album was recorded, who wrote the songs or any other comments, although it is clear that this CD re-issue first appeared in 2001. Nevertheless, the music is what really matters and it is brilliant throughout. Apart from my enthusiasm for old-time country music, I wanted this album because although some...

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning, Yodeling
If you are a Roy Rogers fan you will love this holiday collection. It's a little too "cowboy" and "cheesy" for my taste. However the first track is titled "Jingle Bells/Sleigh Ride" and is one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. You may recall hearing it in the movie Sleepless in Seattle when Meg Ryan is in the car and singing "Horses, Horses, Horses." It's...

5.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat old-time country Christmas, September 7, 2009

This budget release contains absolutely no information about when the album was recorded, who wrote the songs or any other comments, although it is clear that this CD re-issue first appeared in 2001. Nevertheless, the music is what really matters and it is brilliant throughout. Apart from my enthusiasm for old-time country music, I wanted this album because although some of the standards are here, there are plenty of rarely heard songs here too.

The album opens with It's the most wonderful time of the year, a song that you may be familiar with (particularly via Andy Williams' version), but I don't come across too many versions of it so I'm pleased to see it here. Roy and Dale perform it well, setting the standard for what follows. Next comes a medley, Remember whose birthday it is / Happy birthday, gentle saviour, both songs being new to me. Then comes the title track, which is also new to me.

I'll be home for Christmas, the only sad song here, frequently appears on American Christmas albums and deservedly so. It should be familiar to anybody who listens to American Christmas music. I'd never heard the song until I started collecting Christmas albums but I've made up for lost time since. Following this classic song come four songs that I don't remember hearing elsewhere (Star of hope, A Christmas prayer, Merry Christmas my darling, December time) before we reach another familiar song, Let there be peace on Earth. Like the opening track, this track doesn't appear on a huge number of Christmas albums, so it is most welcome here.

Another medley, What child is this / Sweet little Jesus boy, comprises two familiar songs though the first of the two is by far the more famous. The final unfamiliar track, What color is love?, a Dale solo track that doesn't have anything to do with Christmas but is great to hear anyway, precedes a medley of two classics, Jingle bells / Sleigh ride.

This is a generally upbeat album that should please fans of old-time country music.

I haven't heard the Jingle Bells/Sleigh Ride song since I was about 8 years old. Roy Rogers yodeling, the Harmony of Dale Evans what a masterpiece. This is a priceless piece of work.
