Great Christmas music from the 1940's,

This budget collection contains duets with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye as well as solo recordings. It is worth noting that everything here except the two Danny Kaye duets can be found on Merry Christmas from Bing Crosby and the Andrews sisters, which I've already reviewed. However, some of you won't want to pay the higher price of that collection while others will follow my example and buy both. The two Danny Kaye duets are A merry Christmas at Grandmother's and All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth. The Bing Crosby duets featured here are Here comes Santa Claus, Twelve days of Christmas, Jingle bells, Poppa Santa Claus and Santa Claus is coming to town. That only leaves three solo tracks - I'd like to hitch a ride with Santa, Winter wonderland and Christmas tree angel. Their million-selling classic, Christmas Island, is missing, as is Christmas candles, another of my favorites. As a budget collection, this is fine. At the price, I can't complain. But if you only want one album of their Christmas music, buy Merry Christmas with Bing Crosby and the Andrews sisters instead. It's worth the extra cost, especially because it includes Christmas Island and Christmas candles.

What a fabulous collection by the Andrews Sisters-this is a real bargain (...), too! Every song is a classic, especially when the girls are joined by Bing as well as Danny Kaye. Brings back memories of fun times, of an old-fashioned Christmas when families come home for the holidays. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face and have you playing it several times over the holidays. Very highly recommended.

BRING BACK THIS WONDERFUL HOLIDAY CLASSIC!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas (Audio CD)
This is one of the best Christmas albums I've ever heard..anything done by the Andrews Sisters is golden. Please bring back this Christmas cd along with the other Christmas volume that contains their great version of Sleigh Ride. This album, however, is a true classic-how can you go wrong with duet partners like Bing Crosby & Danny Kaye? A must-have for collectors of good old fashioned holiday music, may it never go out of style!

The family have all enjoyed this album for years. These Christmas classics should be in everyone's library. And given their age, the quality of the recordings is quite good.
The only reason I knock it down a star (4) is because a CD that can hold 80 minutes of music really should add at least a few bonus tracks to the basic ten offered on this disc. A better deal would be to add an entire second album on the disc, perhaps Bing Crosby.

Charming Christmas Recordings,

Based on each selection, I give this CD 4.6 stars. Seven of the ten selections are 5 star recordings. My favorite is the 1946 recording of "Winter Wonderland" performed with Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians. The inclusion of non-traditional Christmas songs like "The Christmas Tree Angel," "Poppa Santa Claus" with Bing Crosby and "A Merry Christmas at Grandmother's" with Danny Kaye is what makes this CD more enjoyable. "All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)" by Patty Andrews & Danny Kaye is the only disappointing song. Regardless of that one addition, this is a great Christmas CD and I'd highly recommend having it in your Christmas CD repertoire.

I love to listen to The Andrews Sisters sing; and this album of Christmas songs by them really showcases their extraordinary talents! These three ladies could harmonize and sing far better than just any old sister act--theirs was a talent so special that even today, decades after these songs were recorded, we can still listen to them on CDs like this one. It's terrific to have Bing Crosby teaming up with them on a few of the songs here, too. The quality of the sound is excellent and I love that artwork, too. If truth be told, this album is a bit too short; but what we do get is nothing but the best Christmastime music we could ever ask for from The Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby.
"Here Comes Santa Claus" features The Andrews Sisters singing sweetly as Bing Crosby teams up with them to make this number sparkle. The Andrews Sisters harmonize to perfection--and beyond; and Bing Crosby is in his usual excellent form, too. Their excellent diction enhances their performance even more; and the music that plays fits in perfectly with their vocals. "Twelve Days of Christmas" charms me with its beauty; Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters again team up and the effect is amazing! They handle complex tempo and key changes like the pros they were and always will be! I love it. "Jingle Bells" gets the royal treatment from these fine artists who do this one up right! The melody is very spirited--and how's about that brass? They never let go of a single superfluous note and that's grand. Again the song benefits from having Bing Crosby team up with The Andrews Sisters--not that the sisters actually needed help; but they do sound absolutely wonderful doing this number with Bing Crosby. I know they must have had a lot of fun recording this classic tune! In addition, I like "A Merry Christmas at Grandmother's;" The Andrews Sisters and Danny Kaye perform this with panache and it's quite impressive. "I'd Like to Hitch a Ride with Santa Claus" is cute and well done; and listen for The Andrews Sisters to do a splendid job on "Winter Wonderland." "Winter Wonderland" has a strong arrangement for the brass that works wonders for this tune; and The Andrews Sisters never sounded better! Great! "The Christmas Tree Angel" has fine percussion and the music also uses the strings to great advantage; The Andrews Sisters handle this very well. I enjoy listening to "Poppa Santa Claus;" and "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" gives us The Andrews Sisters and Danny Kaye performing a particularly playful number. The CD ends very nicely with The Andrews Sisters teaming up once more with Bing Crosby on a wonderful rendition of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is a classic that I always love to hear and it makes me want to push the play button on my CD player to listen to this CD all over again! The Andrews Sisters live on through their music; and of course Bing Crosby will always be remembered as one of the best male crooners we ever had. This is a wonderful holiday CD for their fans. |
