Book Description

December 1, 2003

They had both longed for a child. That was enough for Peta and Liam to decide to get married. Love would never have to enter the equation.

But one year later, Peta is devastated to realize that she's fallen in love with her husband, despite their agreement. There's also still no sign of their much-wanted child, and the heartbreaking reason for that is threatening to tear them apart. Then, just before Christmas, a baby girl is abandoned on their doorstep....

4.0 out of 5 stars The gift of an unexpected baby..., July 12, 2004
This review is from: The Christmas Baby's Gift (Wedlocked! #19; Harlequin Presents #2365) (Mass Market Paperback)
Peta and Liam Farrell had married a year ago with the express purpose of not falling in love. The only two things that held their marriage together was their desire to have a child and the incredible passion that existed between them. So when Peta found herself falling in love with her husband of convenience, she knew she was in trouble. How could she give him a child, knowing that she and Liam didn't love one another like they should love one another? She despaired of ever gaining Liam's love, and the prospect of always loving Liam without him loving her back was almost enough to tear her up inside.

Liam had been hurt all of his life, so he didn't need love, or at least, that is what he told himself. If he was honest with himself, his feelings for Peta were beyond anything he had ever imagined they could be. But after a year of marriage, and with no baby on the way, Liam was wondering if he was unable to have children, and he couldn't stand the thought of not being able to give Peta what she wanted so badly. Then, just a few days before Christmas, a baby appeared on Liam and Peta's doorstep - maybe this baby could bring Peta and Liam together, close enough to admit their love for one another!

I really enjoyed this book. Peta was so torn between her love for Liam and the belief that she would do her baby a disservice by bringing it into a loveless marriage. Liam was a wonderful enigma, a man who believed that he didn't need love, but soon realized that no matter what he told himself, he really needed Peta, although he couldn't admit that to her. The passion between the two was unbelievable, almost enough to singe your fingers as you read the book. My only complaint about the book was the fact that Liam and Peta said some awfully hurtful things they didn't mean to one another. I'm talking about things that were almost painful to read. Their argument lasted for several pages, and it was difficult to read because they were so vicious to one another. Other than that, I enjoyed this book immensely, and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to read a passionate, seductive romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars An automatic buy!, November 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Christmas Baby's Gift (Wedlocked! #19; Harlequin Presents #2365) (Mass Market Paperback)
Kate Walker once again shows why she is the diamond in Harlequin's crown of authors. Her talent for pulling the reader into the story and making them feel every outrage, hurt, and ounce of joy her characters experience is unsurpassed. I read this book voraciously cover to cover without coming up for air. If you need a little Christmas magic in your life, this should be an automatic buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but ending too abrupt, October 28, 2010
This review is from: The Christmas Baby's Gift (Wedlocked! #19; Harlequin Presents #2365) (Mass Market Paperback)
Wife of 1-yr feels guilty for deceiving her husband about taking the Pill when they agreed to marry for the purpose of having a baby & not for love. Halfway through their marriage, she changed her mind about their marriage of convenience b/c she realized that she was in love with her husband & didn't want to have a baby in a loveless marriage. She feels reticent about telling him about her love for him b/c he made it clear before that he doesn't believe in love. Husband, on the other hand, has been fearful that he was sterile & has also realized that he's come to significantly care for his wife & wants her in his life permanently. So, when he accidentally finds out about heroine taking the Pill, he feels betrayed & hurt especially when she tells him she doesn't want a child with him & wants out of their marriage. But a baby left at their doorstep hinders their separation & give them the time needed for an honest confrontation.

This was a lovely book. I was pulled into the characters's emotions, thoughts, & conflict. I empathized with both of them. Sexual chemistry & love scenes sizzled. Romance was good. Big misunderstanding was understandable & I was rooting for both to have the courage to be direct & tell each other the truth. Not a 5-star rating b/c it failed to deliver a satisfying conclusion. All of the sudden they're telling each other they love each other without discussing how they get there or discussing their misunderstandings.

Recommended.
