5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas and gifts – lessons learned December 4, 2013

There are few people who haven’t appreciated Sari Barel’s creation of Truthy Ruthy and now she has created a special book for the holidays. As usual the writing is brisk and beautifully timed, the accompanying illustrations are a complete joy, and the concepts imbedded in this little book are invaluable. Sari Barel is a recognized international expert in creative thinking and about this very creative interactive book she has commented; ‘I've always emphasized to parents that giving children the freedom to choose, and find their own solutions, is a great gift that will make a huge difference in their lives. Just remember: there’s always more than one solution!’

Truthy Ruthy’s family is out shopping for Christmas gifts but she is only 5 years old, has no money or car, so how can she participate in the surprise gifts for Christmas? Well, dream of course! She has a dream featuring Santa Claus who quickly left a gift on her front step and disappeared, leaving Ruthy wondering what to do with the gift. And then she woke up, and thought all day about her dream, but that night she didn’t dream that dream again but instead had three dreams – disappointment, initiative, and creation – about the gifts. In Disappointment dream she was unhappy with the gift because it had empty bottles and corks and other ‘useless items’ instead of the doll she wished for – something that costs money – and she threw them away, making her sad on Christmas morning. In Creation dream she saw the same ingredients, but instead of being sad she created gifts for her family form the recycled goods, making wonderful surprise gifts for her family – a situation that made her happy.

In author Sari Barel's latest Truthy Ruthy story, Ruthy wanted to buy Christmas gifts for her family, but what's a five-year-old girl to do? She had no money, she couldn't drive a car, and she wasn't allowed to go shopping alone anyway. In this interactive story, the reader can choose from three different paths for Ruthy, each leading to a different outcome. As interactive fiction goes, "Truthy Ruthy's Christmas Surprise" is a very simple story with only three outcomes, but it's a great way to introduce young children to this form of storytelling. The story is also a nice lesson for kids about being creative in their gift-giving.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Happy Interactive Christmas Story"........ December 10, 2013

The author wrote a happy, interactive Christmas story with our favorite, cute girl Truthy Ruthy...Christmas Surprise is exactly that and sends a very positive message when you help your child pick one of the right endings..Shows your child how to be creative with giving gifts..Truthy Ruthy has no money like all little children but wants to make something nice for my Mom and Dad..So, she has 3 choices to pick from....Which surprise will you pick: The Initiative, The Disappointment, or The Creation...Each dream is different and one shows it's better to sometimes give the Christmas Spirit then to receive .....

3.0 out of 5 stars Took us a while to figure out... January 26, 2014

The idea is great, illustrations are vivid, but we had some technical difficulties with the multiple stories/returning to the beginning for different endings. For some reason our reader would take us out of the entire book. Great life lessons in the stories though, just not a quick read, and my son was frustrated when trying to read alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Feel-Good Yuletide Tale December 6, 2013

"Christmas Surprise" flows with an easy tempo and an overall feel of lightheartedness. The author's writing is rather "quiet" yet carries a strong message, albeit not a preachy or polemic one. The illustration is well constructed.

I have an old 2nd generation Kindle that does not show color and won't do the book any justice, so I used Amazon CloudReader and the interaction embedded in the book worked for me. -- M. Eigh, author of Lose Weight with Okara: a Miracle Food.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done December 2, 2013

I believe it is better to make your own gifts to give on birthdays and Christmas. The author has created a great interactive book that doesn’t simply tell any old story; it actually helps children to think for themselves about the important things in life. I believe the author is very creative and she will inspire youngsters around the world to be the same. I’m glad this values book came out before Christmas, because now my kids are excited about making their own gifts for everyone. Great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat Idea -- Choose your outcome January 4, 2014
Verified Purchase
Colorful and nicely illustrated interactive children's book (Review on Kindle book--224 ipod pages--2013), allowing your child to choose one of 3 options.

Christmas is fast approachingand 5-year old Ruthy is faced with the challenge of "buying" family presents without money, She is gifted with 3 dreams. Each dream presents her with an idea. Your child can select each of the dreams (one at a time) to follow where it leads.

Dream One is "disappointment", a narrow perspective -- a negative look.
Dream Two is about creating things from scratch.
Dream Three is taking the initiative to move forward.

This is another great book to use to begin teaching your your child about perspective (positive/negative). Suggestion: Go through each of the dreams with your child, one each night. Discuss. Good choice? Bad choice? Why? -- Are other dreams better choices? Why? Why not? Benefits to self? Benefits to others? etc.

This book also includes a downloadable template to write and illustrate your own book.
