About the Author

Thackeray, an only child, was born in Calcutta. He studied at Cambridge, but, never a keen student, he left the University in 1830 to travel the continent. He began to study law but gave it up and squandered much of his inheritance on gambling and poor investments. He studied art in Paris, but he did not pursue that professionally either, except to illustrate his own novels. He was a successful novelist, earning the adulation of the very people he satirized. His death at 53 was unexpected. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book is entertaining to read. There are some words I needed to "figure out" rather than "read", but it was still interesting. I enjoy history and this book gave a glimpse into a much earlier time with a bit of humor added. I won't recommend it as reading material for most people I know, but it is one I had fun reading through myself. And since I got it free on my kindle, I can't complain about the price.

Thackeray is definitely a case unto himself, and a writer I enjoy tremendously. His wit and humor are nicely portrayed in four of the five stories comprising the book as he takes on the foibles of the social sets.

For those four, a higher rating would be fine. The fifth one, however, was a bit too long for the tale it told, and frankly the story was not all that interesting.
