5.0 out of 5 stars Forester Sisters - A Christmas Card, January 2, 2000

This is the best Christams C.D. there is. I don't listen to country, although I am not sure the Forester Sisters are country. A friend of mine lent me her cassette tape of them 10 years ago and I fell in love with it. A couple of years later she got me the cassette for Christmas and I have lost it. So here I am buying the CD even after Christmas because I have missed hearing them this year! Buy it you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Holiday Soundtrack, November 2, 2002
By
Austin Skinner (South Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Christmas Card (Reissue) (Audio CD)
Having grown up listening to the The Forester Sisters, I must say that their album, "Christmas Card," warms my heart in a cold season. Is it the ladies' voices? Is it the their chemistry? Or is it the intangible, the feeling? At the height of their popularity, The Forester Sisters were a regularity in my household, and in the car. When, "Christmas Card," was released it gave these lovely ladies a whole new perspective to me. When the season rolls around, and the reminiscing begins, as I said, they warm my heart. The Forester Sisters, "Christmas Card," album is my soundtrack to the holidays. Coming from a 20 year old male, I hope my opinion is helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Christmas album from the eighties, September 7, 2002
This review is from: A Christmas Card (Reissue) (Audio CD)
The Forester sisters made an impact on country music in the late eighties and early nineties, during which they recorded this excellent album. The only original song here is This old white doorway, an interesting song about children growing up.

Three of the others do not appear on many Christmas albums. I first heard An old Christmas card sung by Jim Reeves, but I don't know it's origin. Little toy trains is by Roger Miller. Carol of the bells is a traditional song particularly suited to harmony singing - of the few versions I've come across, this is the best by far.

The remaining songs appear frequently on Christmas albums, but these versions are distinctive because of the four-part harmonies - the four sisters sound like a small choir. The music is kept to a minimum, to emphasise the choral effect.

So, this will appeal to a much broader base than just country fans, as pointed out by an earlier reviewer who loves this despite not liking country music. Indeed, fans looking for traditional country with fiddles and steel guitars may prefer to give this a miss - it's not that kind of album. To them, I recommend Reba's first Christmas album (Merry Christmas to you), which I've also reviewed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Simplicity is Just the Ticket!, December 21, 2009
This review is from: A Christmas Card (Reissue) (Audio CD)
Highly recommended holiday listening! As you can see from the other reviews, this is something of a stealth hit with a devoted following. Its appeal rests primarily on the beautiful voices of the Forrester Sisters, whose blend is superb; and on the simplicity of the arrangements, which sound fresh and appealing after listening to more and more overblown, overscored and frenetic arrangements of holiday music for weeks.

Ironically, one of the reasons this very talented group didn't achieve lasting fame is probably the fact that their vocal arrangements were too straightforward; it's easy to get tired of the sound. (Think The Mills Brothers...) In this case, however, unadorned is just the ticket! The recording has a sweet, nostalgic quality and the selections are excellent whether you're a country fan or not. If you like it, try The Roches' We Three Kings. For a more sophisticated female vocal offering, don't miss Inner Voices' Christmas Harmony. It's another gem of the season.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas classic, January 18, 2009
This review is from: A Christmas Card (Reissue) (Audio CD)
This is the best Christmas album I've ever heard. And I generally hate Christmas music. Nor am I a big fan of "Nashville" country.
But the harmonies on this CD are to die for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Older but still great, November 3, 2004

I first got this cassette when I was in nursing school back in 1990 from a fellow student nurse named Jan. I had heard it playing at her house as we studied and just loved it. She kindly made me a copy and I have treasured it since. Their rendition of Silent Night still has the power to make me cry, it is that beautiful. Their harmonies are perfect and this is the album I choose when the season begins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holiday Harmonies Don't Get Better Than This!!!, December 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A Christmas Card (Reissue) (Audio CD)
This has been our favorite Holiday CD for 2 years, and we have a holiday collection of over 200 CDs and tapes.

There is a sweetly rich blend of harmonies that other performing groups just can't match with the Forester Sisters. Thanks amazon.com for making this CD available because retailers aren't stocking it this year!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect..., December 19, 2011

Glad to see the reissue of a lovely Christmas compilation by The Forester Sisters. I loved this talented harmony of sisters when I first heard them back in the 80's. The one glaring omission from this otherwise superlative set of Christmas melodies is the beautiful song "A Carpenter, A Mother, and A King," which was my favourite, and which I seem to recollect from the original issue. I guess I'll have to continue to fall back on my worn out cassette, until (hopefully) another reissue is made with the missing song.

I had a record of this, and loved it. Now I don't have a record player, so when I saw that it had been reissued as a CD, I jumped at it. The Forrester Sister was one of my favorite groups, and I love Christmas music. It's a beautiful cd. And it has just the right amount of varity, and it's very tasteful. I would recommend this cd.

Probably my favorite Christmas CD - one of the few that I keep out all year round. I had this CD in audio tape form many years ago & then searched till I found it in CD form. Definitely a keeper.
