Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Charles John Huffam Dickens was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time. He created some of literature's most iconic characters, with the theme of social reform running throughout his work. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. His work has been praised for its mastery of prose, and for its teeming gallery of unique personalities, by writers such as George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton, though the same characteristics have prompted others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, to criticize him for sentimentality and implausibility.

More About the Author

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy AND Incomplete, May 19, 2009
This review is from: A Christmas Carol: 1914 Reprint (2008 Vintage Edition) (Paperback)
I guess I expected too much for the price, but this 'reprint' is a poor excuse of a scan of the original 1914 edition. I can almost forgive the illustrations being only in black and white, but it's A.I. Keller's color illustrations that ARE the reason for the reprint. Are they not? How many copies (with excellent illustrations) can you buy of this five star novella in print today? Hundreds! At least do a clean scan of the illustrations. It looks like they were snapped with a Kodak Instamatic through a dirty aquarium. I might also add you need to include the last 173 words of the story in your 'reprint'. My copy finished with "and as good a". I'm sorry. I just don't sleep well at night without Tiny Tim observing "God Bless Us, Every One!"
Oh,yeah...put the "digitized" title on the spine of the 'reprint'. Merry Christmas.

1.0 out of 5 stars not what you'd think, February 6, 2010

This review is from: A Christmas Carol: 1914 Reprint (2008 Vintage Edition) (Paperback)
this volume was written up as a reproduction of a 1900s edition of Christmas Carol. the reprints of the plates were pretty awful, and the last few paragraphs of the book -- the linchpin of the whole darn story -- are missing, like the book was badly put together, or they just stopped when they ran out of paper. i got to the end and the last paragraphs are not even in the book. all in all, a disappointment, not for the story but for the edition.

The item I received was new as described. The book was in excellent condition. There was just one problem, the book was missing THE LAST PAGE OF THE STORY.
That was very Bah Humbug. Check the products before shipping.
Sincerely, C Hurtado
