I've read several derivatives (one with Jane Austen characters and voice, another the original Christmas story with the innkeeper as Scrooge) this year, so I decided it might be time to re-read the original. This was an interesting edition to read because it included a bio of Dickens and the context of the book in the time period. It also included reviews throughout history since the story was first written. Amazing the differences in reviewers' reactions--ranging from a reviewer from Dickens' own time who predicted the story would still be read a hundred years later to a modern reviewer who can't understand why anyone would ever read such a sappy, sentimental story. Some saw Scrooge's transformation as a religious redemption; others saw nothing of the birth of Jesus in the story.

I've read the paperback version of "A Christmas Carol" on an annual basis during the holiday season for almost two decades and this year was the first time I read this classic on the Kindle, and I absolutely loved the Enriched version by Atria. The chronology of Dickens's work, historical context, interpretive notes, critical excerpts, and questions for discussion added immensely to my understanding of the era in which the book was written. The additional information also helped me become more absorbed in this timeless work. Displaying the words in the original script is an awesome touch, too. Bravo!

I wanted to read this book again, after a couple of decades. A bit archaic in style, the book is still good, though not that frightening when I was a kid.

Reviewing Dickens' iconic yuletide classic is, to me, the epitome of gilding the lily. Even though it's all been said before I devote time every Christmas to renewing my acquaintance with the story, its meaning and most amazingly, its pertinence to current events.

From this faithful written version, through classic film versions with Sim, Scott, Stewart and others, all the way to Micky Mouse, The Muppets or Mr. Magoo, the story reflects the season's message. I make it an annual habit to remind myself.

I got this for school purposes. I forgot it for class once, so I borrowed a copy from my teacher. We began reading from the beginning of stave 1, titled Marley's Ghost. That worried me, because I remember my copy having chapters, and the first one being Ebenezer Scrooge. We read on and I was struck by Charles's wordy paragraphs. Later, I went home and picked up my own copy to read further on. Come to find out, my book did not have the crazy sentences my teacher's copy had. I looked at the book and saw that it was an adaptation of the original by Malvina G. Vogel. No where on this website did it say the book was an adaptation. The cover image is even different. So, now I'll have to get another book from somewhere else.
