More About the Author

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

I love the work of Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol is a particular favorite of mine so I immediately ordered this book. I was very disappointed with the size and quality of the reproductions of the original manuscript. The reproductions are small and so unclear as to be almost illegible. The reproductions of the illustrations are similarly poor and reproduced only in black & white inside (they are reproduced in color, slightly larger than postage stamps, on the front and back cover. Best thing about this expensive book is the typed transcript of the manuscript facsimile. The book is strictly for the most ardent of collectors of Dickens and A Christmas Carol in particular.

A delightful novel. A good read for any day of the year. It will remind one to be kind and giving all the time. Plus, Dickens is so humorous and entertaining. I read it on my NOOK. I must alert the reader that Dickens' work is available for free downloading at gutenberg.org. Many of the old classics are. Their copyrights have expired and they are part of the public domain now.

This is my favorite book and I collect every copy I can. It is a lovely edition and I appreciate the original notations of Charles Dickens included. Although the print may be a bit small, it is a great addition to my collection. I recommend it highly as a keepsake!

Another customer has criticized the size of the images of the original manuscript, but I did not find this to be a problem. One can read it, but most customers are going to read the typeset manuscript and refer only occasionally to the original. I found it so very interesting to see the original manuscript; the corrections; the revised portions seemed to give me some insight into Dickens' thought process.

Terrible. We sent it back. Looked like a cheap first draft typewriter version. No pictures and no images of the original manuscript, there was a place for them, but they weren't there. No value in this at all!!!

This version of the book is a little too small to read any of the writings or scribblings that Charles Dickens had.

A legendary story still appropriate after years but it doesn't read as easily as many of the other classics. Follow link for review:
