5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids!, December 4, 2007

This review is from: A Christmas Carol: A Young Reader's Edition of the Classic Holiday Tale (Hardcover)
This edition keeps all the music of Charles Dickens' language but the illustrations make it more accessible for kids. That said, the language is still very challenging so expect to do a lot of explaining. The exposure to classic literature is well worth the effort tho!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice "adapted" version, January 12, 2009

This review is from: A Christmas Carol: A Young Reader's Edition of the Classic Holiday Tale (Hardcover)
This version was "dumbed down" a bit for younger kids, but sticks fairly closely to the original language. I read it to my 5-year old at Christmas and it was probably a bit too old for him. I'd say this version would be good to read to about a 7 year old or for a 9 or 10 year old to read on his or her own. Illustrations were not that impressive.

There is something for everyone in this book. It contains the story of a mean man who receives redemption. Ebeneezer is able to change only with the intervention of three ghostly visitors. They come to him and show his past, present, and future. Throughout the journey, the reader has a chance to see possible mistakes that Scrooge made and how he has suffered from it. This is not only a Christmas classic, but a human nature classic.

This beautifully illustrated edition of the all time favorite Dickens story is perfect for children to read at the Christmas season. If the kids or grandkids in your life are too young to read, they will still certainly enjoy being read to and looking at the wonderful pictures. While shorter than the original, it maintains the complete gist of the story in the words we all love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, January 4, 2011
This review is from: A Christmas Carol: A Young Reader's Edition of the Classic Holiday Tale (Hardcover)
Captivating and beautiful. I had expected to read this to my family over our Christmas vacation. But before I got a chance, the kids read it to themselves. This was their first time through "A Christmas Carol" and they were excited.

This is an oversized format -- a very large picture book -- with an abridged but not dumbed-down reading level. 5th graders can certainly read it; ambitious younger readers can tackle it with a bit of vocabulary help. The book keeps to the original Dickens language, but it is abbreviated a bit. YOunger kids will love the striking illustrations as you read it to them.

Beautiful book.

The book was fantastic. The artistry of the illustrations were
exquisite. The cellophane covered book was in excellent condition
and arrived in just a few days. I would recommend this book for
holiday reading with grade school level children. My grandchildren
were really charmed by the book.
