Sometimes the best gifts are unexpected...
Since the death of her military husband two years ago, single mom Christine White has struggled to get by. By throwing herself into her work as a Chicago copywriter, she's managed to keep food on the table but has gradually lost sight of what really matters, like building a bond with her four-year-old son. When Christine's best friend insists she spend Christmas in Vermont so she can get her life in order, Christine initially resists. Little does she know she's in for a memorable holiday that will reignite her faith and reawaken her heart.

Bachelor professor John Steadman has given up on finding the right one. Spending time with his friends while keeping up with his job seems satisfying enough. Then one day close to Christmas, a beautiful woman from Chicago nearly runs him off the road during a snowstorm. What's more, she's got a kid in her car. It's only natural that John and his trusty golden retriever want to help drag them out of a ditch and steer them toward their destination. What John doesn't expect is that soon he'll be hoping Christine and her son will be staying in Vermont - for more than just a little while.

A sweet, traditional PG-rated romantic comedy.
Standard novella-length, approximately 25,000 words.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Dear Readers,

It's hard to believe that one item of clothing could spark an entire story, but that's how it happened with THE CHRISTMAS CATCH. Two years ago, I was signed with a New York agent and hard at work creating screenplays targeted as features or for television. Though, unfortunately, none got made, I was lucky enough to have a few of them "optioned" (i.e., contracted while a producer tried to set the script up with a studio). A recurring theme in this success seemed to be that studios seek holiday projects. That said, crafting another holiday story was on the agenda.
Problem was, I had no clue what I would write or where to begin. So, I temporarily set the idea aside, opting to think about it later. Meanwhile, it was the holiday season real-time, and my husband asked me what I wanted. Because I'd never owned one before and it seemed fitting and lovely, I asked for a "bright red Christmas scarf."
After a wonderful Christmas morning with our large blended family, I sat by the fire with some hot tea, Christmas scarf draped around my neck, pondering the joys of the season. Two thoughts were on my mind. One, how lucky I was to have found love again with a man who generously accepted my children. And two, how happy I felt to have the sort of husband who asked me what I wanted then always worked hard to deliver. As I wound the scarf more tightly around me, both concepts blended and a burst of creative inspiration hit.
What if I was (as I'd once been) a hard-working single mom who'd relinquished all hope of finding love ever lasting? What if things were compounded by the fact that I lived in a big city and my child was very young? What if I were suffering, not just from the ending of a marriage, but from the devastating loss of my husband in combat as well? My heart welled with emotion as I gripped the scarf, knowing somehow that was the answer. One way or another, this simple winter accessory would prove pivotal to the outcome of a tale involving hope, redemption and renewal.
So, on December 25, 2010, I opened my laptop and began to type. I finished the screenplay three weeks later and my agent adored it. Sadly, our professional relationship ended within the year, so the script never went wide. I tucked it away, knowing I had to do something with it someday. This April, after my ebooks began selling well on Kindle, I decided what. I would take the sweet tale I believed in and convert it to a fiction novella. What better way to have the characters I'd pulled for so ardently finally find their audience? I knew there would be modifications to make and fleshing out to do, but the basic concepts were there.
I endeavored to ensure an early release, so that those who were interested could secure a copy by Christmas 2012. Happy holidays to all and I hope you really like it! Here's wishing you and yours the joys of the season - all year through.
With best wishes for happy endings,
Ginny Baird

5.0 out of 5 stars Only 128 days left until Christmas! August 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As my title states, Christmas is "just around the corner" so be sure to dedicate one day, out of the next 128, to read this wonderful short Christmas romance. Most of the time with these Christmas romance books the word romance is simply a euphemism for sex, and Christmas is so loosely written into the story as to be nonexistent. Not so with this little gem. The author took the time to incorporate the feeling of Christmas and the holiday season into this well written story, and the tale she tells is wholesome and thoroughly refreshing. There is no portrayal of sex in this novella, although innuendo does play a part.

Perhaps my only complaint with this short is that at times the dialogue and interjections from Christine's four-year-old son, Tyler, seemed a little age inappropriate. He was young enough to tote around a teddy bear and go to preschool, but his comments seemed to come from a child with a few more years under his belt. This isn't a big thing and it's most likely something most will never notice, but I did.

All told, I think almost any reader of romance stories will like this is sweet, romantic, nicely portrayed, and has the ability to transport you right into the thick of things. With its Christmas theme and Vermont winter setting, it's the perfect way to start getting ready for the Holidays. Enjoy!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Catch August 19, 2012
By Jessica
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Copywriter Christine White lost her husband in Afghanistan two years ago, and now she's living alone with her small son Tyler in Chicago. Having spent so much time at work is starting to harm her relationship with Tyler, so she agrees to go to Vermont and house sit over the Christmas Holiday. Christine figures this will help the two spend quality time together. After getting her car stuck in the snow, she's rescued by the very handsome Professor John Steadman. The two quickly form a friendship, but both are apprehensive of taking their relationship any further. Will Christmas bring them happiness or heartache?

This is a very simple story, no convoluted speed bumps in this one. This is just two people developing a relationship without the drama of anything going on in the background, no mysteries, no jealous ex's, no one wants to kill them, no parental interference, nada. I did have two very small issues with this though, the first being that Tyler's age and the way he's written seem a bit inconsistent at times. The second being that the ending seemed rushed to me, but the epilogue saves it. Christine and John are both very likable characters. This is a great relaxing Sunday afternoon read.

*This is a clean romance, no naughty bits...just kissing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet August 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The cover might be a bit misleading because it denotes something that is sexy, but this book is rated G and quite honestly, it is so wholesome that even one of your tweens can read it.

The book description says it all. "The Christmas Catch" is the story of single mom Christine White and college professor hottie John Steadman. He lives and works in Vermont and they met when Christine and her son Tyler, who lives in Chicago took their vacation in Winterhaven.

This well-written and well-edited short story is worth all the accolades it is getting. All the characters, including the supporting ones were all fleshed out nicely. The story flowed naturally and though there were a few dialogue that might seem out of place, it did not detract from the story.

I was going through my Kindle and happened upon this book. I really enjoyed the story and the characters especially Mason the dog! I did get teary eyed from time to time at some of the situations in the book. I found myself smiling and laughing out loud a lot. So, if you are looking for a quick read that will pull at your heart strings I recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars SWEET CHRISTMAS TIME CATCH February 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a predictable but none-the-less a sweet rendition for the Christmas Season. I read this after the season was over but I found it to be at least 3.5 star read.

While the plot was predictable the characters were refreshing and the theme was in keeping with the magical time of the year we call Christmas. Everyone knows that magic can and does happen at this time of the year. The single mom with the charming son who meets the handsome, college professor in the snows of New England was particularly nice.

I loved and recommend it as a nice, light, quick Christmas time read. Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars a pleasant holiday read November 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I think this was just about the right length: long enough for there to be a clumsy beginning (as so often happens when two people meet and put up walls to ward off rejection), a resolution to a promising future, a resurgence of that wall-putting-up fear of new futures, and a denoument to bring about the Happily Ever After. All this occurred without a string of stupid misunderstandings, only your garden variety insecurity-do-I-dare-take-a-chance sort of scrape, serious enough to make the reader think the HEA might not come about this once.

This writer apparently started out as a screen-writer. Perhaps that helped her craft a story style with believable characters (rather than alpha males and ethereal, angelic females) in credible relationships. If she'd written more, she would have had to trot out the usual plot twists. This was just right. I'd like to see her expand to a longer format.
