This is already my favorite instrumental Christmas album after only a couple of listens. It is everything I was hoping for when I bought Yoyo Ma's album a couple years back and found it to be lacking in what I consider a beautiful cello sound. This has it in spades. Every song is masterfully arranged so that you recognize your Christmas favorites, but not over done or smaltzy. I was going to give you some of my favorites, but frankly, I can't narrow it down, the whole album is great! I highly recommend it for your holiday season. Merry Christmas!

We have enjoyed this album, even though we are not in "official Christmas music" season. There are some catchy arrangements and classic sounds included in this selection.

I am a fan of Steven Sharp Nelson's other cello works (especially The Cello Song), and gave this album a shot figuring it would probably be like all other "celebrity" Christmas albums - cookie cutter carols. I was happy to be wrong! The melodies are a mix of cello and other instrumentals, and are subtly woven with new sounds so that the carols are still beautiful and recognizable, but still different from the hundreds of other versions out there. Definitely a recommended buy! If you're not attached to having the actual CD, though, consider buying the MP3 download instead - it was less than half the price when I was buying.

Before you purchase this CD, you might want to take a quick trip to their website or look them up on YouTube in order to understand that you are not about to buy an ivory-tickling experience in music. No, these guys play cellos. Let me rephrase that, they perform with cellos. A look at just one of their videos (especially the Star Wars spoof) and you will see that creative genius is alive and well in the minds and hands of Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, Tel Stewart, Paul Anderson and Al van der Beek (yeah, the "piano" guys).
My first brushing with them was the song "Carol of the Bells" from this CD. A unique arrangement that really gets your attention. The video isn't bad, either. But, since I am reviewing the CD, let me simply say that this CD provides wonderful departures from the usual renditions of these pieces and the piece "Simple Gifts" is a great surprise treat in itself. (You will likely recognize it if you are a Copland aficionado.)
For the holiday season, you are looking at a tremendous find. Make Santa (and yourself) happy this year and get this CD.

My daughter just gave me the album and I love every song. I think Steven's rendition of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. When I first heard it, I was moved to tears. And what a great arrangement of "Simple Gifts"! I really think I will be listening to all these songs the whole year long.

Steven Sharp Nelson is 1/4 of the group The Piano Guys. Love this Christmas album, almost as good as when he is with his other 3/4 guys.

Dearly love this CD. What beautiful music, beautifully played. We love the arrangements of traditional favorites that are fresh but not strange or "different" just for the sake of being different; they are creative and respectful and just lovely. I think there is no more beautiful Christmas song than "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and this version is just marvelous. This music somehow manages to be relaxing and to evoke a state of thoughtfulness and contemplation without being sad or maudlin, as some Christmas music can be. I've been playing this daily since receiving it and love it. Playing it while working is lovely, too. Our family buys new Christmas music almost every year but this CD is our favorite and is being played over and over.
