5.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre, rare Christmas films!, December 12, 2006

This review is from: The Christmas Classics Collection (DVD)
This box set totally impressed me! I knew it had the 1935 version of "Scrooge" with Seymour Hicks and 1964's "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" but I was pleasantly surprised with all the rarities! There are a total of 19 films on 5 discs; some wonderfully creaky old Christmas/Santa Claus films dating as far back as 1906, 1910 and 1925. There's a ten minute silent version of "Scrooge," a three minute clip of the silent Our Gang Christmas film "Good Cheer," a special Christmas version of the "You Asked For It" TV show from the early 50's, a Christmas episode of the old "Long John Silver" TV show, the holiday/fantasy 1940 film "Beyond Tomorrow," the full-length Jimmy Durante film "The Great Rupert" and more! There's also a bizarre film from 1906 that lasts only a few minutes, but it shows a bunch of women (in old 1890's dresses, yet!) and men romping in the snow.....I still can't figure out what the heck it was filmed for! If you enjoy rare, old films, this package truly is a rare find, and I suggest you pick it up in case it's discontinued because you may not find some of these films anywhere else: especially the silent ones. Absolutely enjoyable if you're an old movie buff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, January 25, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Christmas Classics Collection (DVD)
This 5 DVD set is a must-have for anyone who enjoys Christmas movies. Ten of the 19 films are silent, which might put some people off. I could never get myself to watch silent films before we bought this collection, but I really enjoyed each one of them. It was like watching a little piece of history. The picture quality was good, too.

The titles included in this are:
Disc 1-Scrooge (1935, 78"); Santa Clause (1925, 30"); A Christmas Accident (1912, 15"); A Trap for Santa (1909, 16")

Disc 2-Beyond Tomorrow (1940, 84"); A Christmas Carol (1910, 17"); Our Gang's Christmas (AKA Good Cheer) (1926, 3"); Santa Claus vs. Cupid (1915, 16")

Disc 3-Meet John Doe (1941, 122"); The Gift (1953, 25"); The Adventure of the Wrong Santa Claus (1914, 14"); The Night Before Christmas (1905, 10"); A Winter Straw Ride (1906, 7")

Disc 4-The Great Rupert (1950, 88"); A Holiday Pageant at Home (1901, 5"); The Orphans' Christmas (1955, 26"); You Asked For It (1951, 22")

Disc 5-Santa Clause Conquers the Martians (1964, 86"); The Case of the Christmas Pudding (1955, 30")

Its good to see some of the old Christmas movies. Most new Christmas themed movies are in my opinion garbage.
