Mathes is the Mozart of the Millenium,
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Is Coming (Audio CD)
As a part time musician. I am always looking to hear extraordinary talent. There doesn't seem to be enough around. But Rob Mathes' music is truly extraordinary. The 1st time I heard Rob Mathes (and his Boy Elroy) in the early 90's at a club in Westchester, I was drawn in to the sound. I clearly remember being transfixed by his singing, guitar playing and the bands playing. Someone in the crowd said that I was listening to Chuck Mangione's back up band. I had to listen to more Rob Mathes but the only way I knew how was go out and buy Mangione's Eyes Of A Veiled Temptress. I listened to that CD, allot. Even on that album, you could hear Rob's harmonious influence, both on guitar and vocals. I also saw "Elroy" at the Bitter End in Manhattan several years ago. Having played there myself, the sound equipment is not top notch and it didnt do the band justice. Since then I have had difficulty finding Rob's music. I have looked. A friend said that he heard Rob was producing. And then flipping channels the other night, PBS had a musician that was playing this song William the Angel. I was transfixed. Something looked and sounded familiar? Perhaps it was Will Lee in the background? no. Then they flashed to info that this was a Rob Mathes video. Oh baby!!!! I couldn't believe it. There he was playing new great music, again. Well alright!! . And then all these guest artists started coming out: David Sanborne, Michael McDonald, etc. Great show. So thank you Rob, keep on playing ....+ PLS make more CDs!!!. Also Are here any tapes/CDs from Rob Mathes and His Boy Elroy? Happy Holidays

I saw the Rob Mathes Christmas special on TV and heard his works for the first time. He is a very gifted artist. "William the Angel" is such a special song. It's really hard to fight back the tears during this song. I highly recommend adding this CD to your Christmas music library.

Wow. The White Album of Christmas music.,

This review is from: Christmas Is Coming (Audio CD)
I've never heard anything like this. Just when you're settling into one amazing and original Mathes version of Christmas, you're turned on your head and given something completely different. Horns, acoustic, choir, soaring Sanborn saxophone, those angelic vocals. I defy you to find a Christmas album on the planet this rich and varied, and yet with such a pure and singular voice. Stick it in the player and leave it there until New Year's, you won't get bored for a moment and anyone who walks into your house for eggnog will turn to you open mouthed and ask, Who IS this?

Amazing Music, amazing show.,

As one who sang in the follow up concert to this album, as part of the choir, all I can say is I've never had such a great time singing, and its all because of the music. This music by Rob Mathes will pull at your heartstrings and make you smile, not just at Christmas but all day long. He is a fantastic arranger, a better keyboardist and even better guitarist. And he's put together a band with amazing talent: Drums, Horns, Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Choir, Piano. This album just doesn stop. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Gather powerhouse musicians, an orchestra, choir, and writer Rob Mathes, and what do you get? You get an incredible seasonal masterpiece of songs only available, until now, to select audiences. Rob Mathes has made a name for himself in the New York area as a powerful singer/song writer, who really knows how to put on a show. With his guest musicians Vanessa Williams, Michael McDonald, and David Sanborn, he has created a live CD that every household should have throughout the holidays! Keep it coming!

Rob Mathes Is a Brilliant Composer, Arranger, and Musician,
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Is Coming (Audio CD)
I have been at every single one of Rob Mathes' Christmas Concerts, including the one on this CD, and have loved everyone of them. His incredible original compositions and arrangements are further augmented by his amazing piano and guitar playing and his singing. In addition to this you've got people like Vanessa Williams, David Sanborn, and Michael McDonald adding their talent to this great live album. I now sing in Rob Mathes' choir, which is an amazing experience, and I can tell you Rob is the best conductor I've ever had. Hopefully soon some more of Rob's albums will get full release, like his first non-christmas CD, "Evening Train," which is also a great piece of work. If you like this album, also take a look at Vanessa Williams's "Star Bright," which has three of Mathes's songs on it.

Johnny Mathis Move Over -- Rob Mathes Exemplifies Christmas,
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Is Coming (Audio CD)
Are you looking for a Christmas album that brings something new to your collection? This is The One. Not just another regurgitation of the same old Christmas carols, Rob Mathes seems to rejuvenate the genre. A mix of rock, jazz, gospel and traditional, Mathes sings with such passion and joy at the wonder and beauty of Christmas, that you cannot help but be affected as well. Combine his incredible talent with the likes of Vanessa Williams, jazz genius David Sanborn and Michael McDonald (whose rendition of Silent Night is amazing), and you have an album that will be first on your play list every holiday season--- Although you'll probably be tempted to play it other times of the year too. We will hear A LOT more from Rob Mathes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. -B. Larsen

I caught Rob Methus by accident on a local cable station. He performed "When The Baby Grew Up" and "Wake Up It's Christmas Morning" by himself with his guitar. I am very happy to have found this CD. He has great talent and I look forward to his future work.
