Book Description

September 6, 2005
The first new Prairie Home Christmas collection in ten years is a warm and wonderful celebration of storytelling, music, and the holiday spirit.

It’s Christmas in Lake Wobegon, Christmas at the old radio show, Christmas at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Christmas wherever friends and families gather to rejoice, reminisce, and share the holiday spirit. This all-new collection includes songs, sketches, sound effects, laughter, sweet nostalgia, and a monologue or two, all with a Christmas theme and all heard originally on live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion. Garrison Keillor, the show’s cast, and special guests are joined by hundreds of friends and acquaintances in a holiday gala that’s sure to become a family favorite and an annual tradition.

From AudioFile

This compilation is wonderful and occasionally strange. The material, all related to Christmas, is well executed, but the transitions from Lake Wobegon to a blues number, or from an extended radio sketch/fictional ad to "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" are occasionally odd. However, that is the album's sole weakness, as many beautiful voices visit to share the holiday spirit, and many versions of old favorites give them new life. This blend of humor, sentiment, and seasonal music is a joy to the ear. It's sure to make listeners laugh out loud, tumble into memories, and perhaps even sing along. 4.0 out of 5 stars Spend Christmas Eve or Night by the Fire Enjoying These CDs!, December 9, 2005

I found the CD heartwarming, amusing, enjoyable, and only very occasionally, boring. If you're looking for perfection in musical rendition, look elsewhere. These are recordings of live radio broadcasts, after all, and don't have the polished elegance of overdubbed and edited studio sessions. Garrison is at the top of his form, however, and one man's repugnant "Twas the night before Christmas" was this man's bemused reflections on how things too often are. There's variety, wit, and enough talent to make any Christmas eve or Christmas night a happy one. Also, if you choose, there's enough content to provide family discussion starters for anyone over the age of eight or 10.

I had never listened to something by Garrison Keiler before but found that this CD was very entertaining. I found myself laughing and crying and loving my time just sitting and listening. Well worth your money and time.

If you have a sense of humor, you and your kids will like this. The twelve days of Christmas was just hilarious and cleverly done. The story about the gift for mom was really funny too.
