Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As in previous series entries, the basset hound named Elvis, who channels Elvis Presley and serves as one of the tales narrators, provides the humor in another madcap mystery from the talented Webb. Elvis is trying to get his owners, Callie and Jack, back together while keeping everyone safe from a murderer who electrocutes mall Santas sitting on a lit-up throne. First, Callie’s uncle Charlie is zapped, but a person holding his hand dies. When another Santa is zapped and killed, Callie and her cousin Lovie don disguises to discover who is doing the killing and why. Readers new to the series may have trouble keeping track of suspects, but not to worry: a holiday séance party sorts out several questions. Recipes are included in this enjoyable adventure, which emphasizes humor and zany characters more than mystery. Mary Daheim’s fans will enjoy the repartee among the relatives. --Amy Alessio

Elvis is back in Mississippi with his crime solving co-owners, Callie Valentine and Jack Jones. The Jones just back from the misadventures in the Mayan jungles are co-existing while Jack's broken leg heals. Although the divorce is proceeding, our Callie is having second thoughts.

Uncle Charlie Valentine agrees to involve the entire family in a charity Christmas Santa show at the local mall. When Rudolf gets electrocuted, Callie has to search for the killer because Uncle Charlie might have been the desired victim except for chance.

Elvis, a true hound dog (basset variety) who knows he is the human Elvis reincarnated, is Callie's love and security (in his mind.) Elvis treats us to his thoughts, songs, and wardrobe desires and thoughts throughout the novel. A truly humorous treat.

This mystery is not as straight forward as it might seem, filled with twists, unusual characters, and more. The mystery is quite complex as you laugh your way through. At the end are some delicious and luscious recipes, by cousin Lovie.

A fun and solid reading treat for a cozy murder.

It's the season to be merry and Uncle Charlie has signed the Valentines up to spread some cheer. With Uncle Charlie as Santa, Callie agrees to be the too tall, skinny Elf. When Rudolph turns up dead, Callie wonders if Santa aka "Uncle Charlie" was the intended target, and she and Lovie work around the clock trying to find the killer before Uncle Charlie IS the next victim!

I discovered this series a year ago, and I've worked in rapid succession to catch up with this series because I love it so much. I love how zany Callie's mom, Ruby Nell, is and while Callie's love-life is pretty complicated with her husband, Jake, living with her but they aren't together. Meanwhile she is interested in the local vet, Champ. The romance gets a partial resolution and I'm still enjoying Callie's somewhat hectic love life!

I really liked the Christmas setting, and the mystery was very suspenseful. Just when I thought Callie had the murderer figured out, she actually didn't and it looked like she may have been the next victim!

Elvis and the Blue Christmas Corpse is a very zany, fun cozy mystery. Quite possibly my favorite moment in the whole book was when Bobby and Uncle Charlie proposed a drive through window at Eternal Rest! The thought of people driving by while munching on their McDonalds cracks me up. I definitely love the corniness of the funeral home humor in this series!

I really enjoyed this book, and my only regret is the long wait till the next release!

I really enjoyed this book. Lovie and Callie are great together. They stand by each other no matter what. The rest of the Valentine clan and their friends are pretty funny too. Then there is Elvis, he really looks out for Callie, and he knows who the killer is before anyone else, if they would just let him lose to prove it. I highly recommend this read, it is a charming, cozy mystery.

I can't wait for the next installment of the southern cousins mysteries. They are quick, fun reads, and being from the South myself, I just can't get enough.

It is Christmas time and Callie Valentine has plenty on her mind - like the fact that her not quite ex-husband Jack is staying at her house while he recovers from leg surgery. But Kelly soon has more to worry about when the person playing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is killed and her Uncle Charlie almost dies while playing Santa at the mall. Callie, along with other family members, is determined to track down the killer. They have plenty of suspects but need to be careful - this killer is not afraid to strike again.

"Elvis and the Blue Christmas Corpse" is a cute mystery set at Christmas time. There are a lot of things to like about this book and series starting with Elvis the Bassett Hound who thinks he is the reincarnation of THE Elvis. The book alternates viewpoints between Elvis and his owner Callie - a plot device that works quite well. Callie is another great character - not quite over Jack's betrayal, dating a little, but still has feelings for Jack. Other characters are also well done but, while they are quite funny, the humor sometimes is close to being over the top. Lovie is a good example (can't author Peggy Webb actually write the swear words she says - just once?). Fayrene is another example. I've come to dislike characters who mangle words in cozy mysteries - it stops being funny very quickly. Having said that, there is so much to enjoy in this book that those are minor flaws. While the book is a cozy mystery, the Christmas setting and killings make this just a bit creepy - deliciously so (although you'll think twice about accepting free cookies at a mall!) There are a number of smaller plot lines that are also deliciously creepy. The mystery aspects are well done with plenty of suspects - there sure are some odd characters in Callie Valentine's world!

I'll start off by saying that I am a fan of Webb's Southern Cousins Mysteries series and have read them all.
I read Elvis and the Blue Christmas Corpse while on my Christmas vacation this year. I loved it.

Callie and Lovie are back to their full on mayhem antics. The two of them together are unstoppable. I really enjoyed that most of the action in this novel was focused on the partnership-in-crime schemes between these two good ole girls.

Uncle Charlie, Ruby Nell, and Frayrene all make their worthy and side splitting contributions as well.
And Jack...well he was Jack.

The mystery was tight and kept me wondering till the end.
Some outstanding storylines have been concluded-finally- and I can't wait to see what these conclusions lead to next. Some new characters have been introduced and I hope to see them in future novels.
