Book Description

October 6, 2008
Charles Dickens penned this sketch in December, 1835 as his conception of an ideal Yuletide gathering. Dickens, who may have invented the modern notion of Christmas, had lively ideas about what a family Christmas should be---down to how preparations should be shared, what dainties might be served and what should be part of a Christmas Day Feast. This book is enriched with the Christmas menus devised and recipes (some from the Dickens household) adapted for contemporary cooks by distinguished culinary historian, Alice Ross, as well as with an introduction by Dickens' most important living biographer and prize-winning novelist, Peter Ackroyd. Also included are 16 original and historically accurate paintings by the talented young artist, Sharon Stein.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Dickens invites us to sit down to dinner on the most perfect day of the year. Hurts are forgiven and love abounds in this spirited Christmas tale. --Donna VanLiere, author of "The Chrismas Shoes" and other holiday favorites

Review

This beautifully-illustrated book brings a little-known and terrific Christmas story by Charles Dickens to new readers. It's a gift both to culinary professionals and to everyone who enjoys the magic of Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, December 5, 2008
This review is from: A Christmas Dinner (Hardcover)
"A Christmas Dinner" is a beautifully illustrated version of Charles Dickens' very first story about the ideal Yuletide gathering. Following the tale are 40 pages of Christmas and Christmas eve recipes from both the Dickens family and his contemporaries. "A Christmas Dinner" truly brings history alive and can help you make your holiday festive and bright (and tasty)!

Alice Ross is responsible for over half this book, yet Amazon doesn't even provide a link to her name (though I have contacted them about it). The publisher cites her contribution as "menus and recipes", neglecting to credit that Ms. Ross provided commentary and historical context to the food and customs of the time. As a noted culinary historian and teacher, Ms. Ross brings great expertise, and knowledge. Without her work this would be merely an interesting literary gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN DINING EXPERIENCE, December 13, 2008
This review is from: A Christmas Dinner (Hardcover)
'A Christmas Dinner' is full of unique illustrations that bring the Christmas season of another time to life again. The recipes are wonderful and can once again become 'new'. I have a dear friend whose mission is to search recipes from the past and this book will, without a doubt be a perfect Christmas gift.
