A beautiful old-fashioned story of love and kindness,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Christmas Doll (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful, wonderful book, and should be at the top of your Christmas list for that special girl in your life. It has everything--wonderful characters, exciting on-the edge of your seat plot, beautiful language and imagry, and an old-fashioned message of selfless love, and of reaching out to others in need. I don't want to say more because I don't want to give anything away. Buy it, read it first, then give it to as many children as you know. ...

Exciting Journey,
By
This review is from: The Christmas Doll (Paperback)
This is the story of two sisters who only have each other in all the world. Faced with illness in the orphanage they try to make it out on the streets - it isn't easy each day they are hungry cold tired and afraid. The girls never give up their determination to stay together and remember happy times. They also show the true spirit of Christmas is giving. This story is well written and beautifuly told. It is recommended for children 9 - 12 but my daughter enjoyed having it read to her at age six. I think the story would even appeal to children older than 12.

Like "A Little Princess",
By
This review is from: The Christmas Doll (Paperback)
The Christmas Doll is a children's story about two orphan girls who live and work in a workhouse in Dickensian England. Life is hard for the girls who are constantly cold and hungry. When some of the children in the factory become sick, Sara (the eldest), fears for her younger sister Glory. The two girls run away and have many frightening and exciting adventures on the streets of London, before finding a place they truly belong.
I listened to the audio edition of this novel and really enjoyed it. Sarah and Glory are two strong-minded powerful little girls, whose friendship and loving hearts endure many terrible tragedies. Wonderful. 5 stars. Suitable for all ages. Sensitive really young children should read with a parent.

Couldn't put this down!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Christmas Doll (Paperback)
My 8 yr old daughter started reading this at my request, but once started, she couldn't put it down. She would even read it in the car on the way to gymnastics and loved reading it aloud to me to share the story. It made her WANT to read, the story was so touching and engaging. To date, this is still her favorite book of all time. The chapters are long enough to make her feel she accomplished a lot of reading, but not too long that she felt she'd never finish one. Great story, memorable message and always timely. A must read!

The Christmas Doll, By Elvira Woodruff,
By Sarah B. "Gertrude" (Eugene, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Christmas Doll (Paperback)
This book I really liked. I had this book for a very long time, but never really got to read it. I started it one day and I couldn't stop. I finished it within two days. Glory and Lucy Wollcot are sisters living in the workhouse (The home for little orphan girls)in London Town.Their meal are scarce their nights are dark and cold and they hear many terrible storys of little girls who escape then get caught. To brighten up their spirits, Lucy "creates" storys of their family that she barley rembers- and a doll named Morning Glory that they are sure they will find again some day. When a deadly fever comes accross the workhouse, the girls escape without getting caught to the terrible streets of London. When the sisters find an old, discarded doll, Glory is positive that it is Morning Glory. Morning Glory is different from other dolls... And she works her magic on every body!

The Christmas Doll,
This review is from: The Christmas Doll (Hardcover)
"The Christmas Doll" is an exceptional book set in the England of Dickens. For the last five year, I have read it to my Grade 5 classes. The response from both boys and girls is overwhelming, as they experience vicariously the harsh lives of workhouse children in long ago London. The author weaves a thread of magic throughout the book which keeps the reader in suspense and wanting to read on. Though I have read the book numerous times, I have never tired of it and neither have the children I have taught. Next to "The Christmas Carol", this little masterpiece is one book which will always be an annual Christmas tradition for me. The ending of the book is perfect - it always brings tears to my eyes and showcases the hope of goodness in the world. I have recommended this book to many people and give it away as special prizes at school. This is one book which should be on the shelves of every classroom and homes where books are loved. As a final word, my fifth graders have voted this book as their favourite overall for every year that I have read it.
