"Christmas On the Farm" is delightful journey into the Christmas celebrations on an Iowa farm during the Depression years of the late 1920's and the 1930's. In this nostalgic 11 3/8 inch by 8 3/4 inch, 96 page illustrated book, Bob Artley - author and illustartor, paints an informative and entertaining picture of farm life and Christmas celebrations in words, beautiful water colored paintings, cartoons, and sketches. The non fiction nostalgic narrative will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

To prepare the reader for the Christmas celebration on the farm, Bob Artley gives lots of background information on Iowa farm life during the Great Depression. He tells a story in great detail about things like: silent and dark nights where the sounds of the farm could be heard, winter chores, shopping at the General Store, Santa's visit to the farmhouse, huge snowstorms, Christmas programs in the one room schoolhouse, Christmas vacation, Christmas home celebrations and preparations, wonderful foods from Mom's kitchen, Dad's workshop where he made wonderful homemade wooden toys for the children, singing Christmas carols around the family piano and the beauty of crystal clear and silent winter December nights where one could sometimes see a shooting star or the Aurora Borealis.

I feel that all readers would definitely enjoy this book -- especially children - for not only the details of farm life and Christmas of long ago, but also for the beautiful pictures and cartoons which appear throughout the book. I originally bought this book to donate to my elementary school library for their Christmas book collection. There is one word of caution when purchasing this book for a younger child or donating to an elementary school library. In Bob Artley's desire to paint a descriptive and detailed account of 1930's farm life, he mentions that they would castrate the pigs. He does not get into any detail but does mention the word. This may present a problem for young inquisitive minds, so be aware that the word does appear in the text but it is not explained in any detail.

Some of the text pages are filled with so many details that younger readers may lose interest, especially if they are reading them independently.

You will definitely enjoy this book, especially if you live on a farm or have had parents or grandparents or other relatives who lived on a farm. You will also enjoy it if you don't live on a farm or if you ever wished that you did.

We love this book! It is a great picture of life on the farm in Iowa not so many years ago. Our grandchildren love reading the book with us and seeing the wonderful pictures.

Mr. Artley paints a sweet nostalgic look at Christmas of the past.
From the special homemade toys, to the school Christmas programs.
And how cozy a wood burning stove could make the house.
He make you feel like you are there with his family.
It is a wonderful way for old and young alike to experience an old fashion,
Christmas on the farm.

As someone who have great grandparents who lived on the farm, I have vague remembrances of their home around the holidays, but alas, I did not spend much time there. This book paints a beautiful picture of the holidays on the farm in all of its glory. I have started to read this with my kids now and have been tying in my own memories of farm life as well as they have never know any family member who has lived on the farm unfortunately. This book changes that and affords them the opportunity to dream and imagine a simpler life unlike their own!

I got this book to gift to loved ones who grew up on farms. They enjoyed it so much that they in turn bought more to gift to others. The illustrations are beautiful and the verbiage will bring you back to farm Christmas festivities in years gone by.
