Wonderful insight into the Christmas traditions of France, March 23, 2007
This review is from: Christmas in France (Christmas Around the World) (Hardcover)
Part of a series developed by World Book Inc. several decades ago for young people, these 80-page books have evolved into a rich storehouse of information for anyone of any age who enjoys learning the Christmas history, stories, regional Christmas songs, Christmas crafts, and holiday recipes of many nations.
One of the highlights of "Christmas in France" is the chapter on "The Santons of Provence." Years ago it was difficult to obtain information regarding the santons, or little saints, outside France. Today we can get the information through the Internet. This book tells the history of the clay figures and shows how they are made.
"Christmas in France" is richly illustrated with full-color photos. Three French carols have the original language, English translation, and treble notes -- "Sleep, Little Jesus," "Christ is Born," and "O Holy Night." There is also a section on French Christmas crafts.
Recipes in the book are roast goose and baked red cabbage along with a description of various types of French cheese to serve with Christmas dinner. Included with the book are six recipe cards for additional Christmas treats and an Advent calendar.
Collect the whole series for your home library, re-read them every December, and share them with friends and family.
