Good stuff, if unspectacular...,

This review is from: Christmas (Audio CD)
Upon initial guess, based on the title and album cover, you might think that this album contains Christmas duets featuring Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. Instead, this is a collection of ten Christmas songs, performed by either Bing or Frank, but unfortunately never together.
How can these two crooners not receive a five-star review? First, the album is way too short, with only ten tracks, totaling just over thirty minutes (and that includes a ten minute medley from Holiday Inn). Second, several of the cuts (like Sinatra on "O Little Town of Bethlehem/Silent Night") are, to be frank, rather boring. These guys are great singers, but they need an arrangement that allows them to do something. For instance, Bing's "Jingle Bells" is probably my favorite recording of that rather mediocre song. I wish each track had that much energy. In any case, you can't go wrong with Sinatra and Crosby and Christmas music. Though this isn't one of my absolute favorites, we're always happy to listen to this album each Christmas season!!

Frank and Bing were a great duo,

Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra were great together as well as individually, and this CD proves it once more. With many of the great Christmas standards here, this CD makes for terrific listening.

Christmas from 1942,

I don't think these recordings aren't all from 1942, but this CD is put together so that it plays as though you're listening to one of Bing's war years radio broadcasts. Some songs have of Bing's intros included, and there are a few vintage ads, too, including a spot Bing does for War Bonds. So this isn't just a wonderful Christmas album (for a great price), but also something of a time capsule. The sound is mono, naturally, but excellent for the time these recordings were made. Put it on and tack a trip back to Christmas that was.
