This was a great holiday gift for my son's 5th grade teachers and our library! I don't usually shop this early for Christmas, but I could not resist giving it to them early. Dan Gutman is ever popular and the illustrations by Dan Santat throughout the book are way cool! It's a quick read and a clever story.

My son chose this book to read for his book club (a few 4th grade friends). My son really liked the style the book was written in; he told me it was unique. His buddies enjoyed it very much too.

Our 2010 family Christmas book,

Our family chooses a Christmas book to read out loud as a family in December. This was a great choice. The kids didn't want us to stop reading at night, even though we try to pace ourselves to end the book on Christmas Eve. The premise was very cute - a genie landing in a 5th grade class just before christmas vacation and granting the class only one wish. The kids choose to deliberate the merits of each others wishes and provide some great insights into why each wish is good or bad. This class is more educated in the area of global politics than most fifth grade classes. But, the language was right on target for my girls, ages 6, 10 & 13 - yes my 13 year old laughed along and set aside time to listen. The book was contemporary but the story a classic. Toward the end I was wondering how the book would wrap up. The author did a nice job and I would HIGHLY recommend this book for any family member.

Borrow this, don't purchase it!!!,
This review is from: The Christmas Genie (Paperback)
I loved the premise of this book. However, I did not enjoy this book at all. I guess that is because the students' wishes really bored me. I would not have mind it so much if there were only 12-15 of them. But twenty-five was a bit much. Plus, I hated the way the novel ended. It really made me feel as though I wasted my time. I love Dan Gutman, but I would not encourage anybody to read OR purchase this book. But, if there is somebody out there who feels as if they must read all of Gutman's books, then I would encourage you to borrow this from the library. Don't waste your time buying it!!!

i am a huge dan gutman fan but was disopionted by this book. it starts by a genie coming to a classroom and giving them 1wish. the kids all write their wishes and the genie turns into santa beacause someone jokingly says that he wished that the genie would be santa. all in all this book is ok but not great. dan gutman does better. if you read this book please read his other books before you give up this cool auther. its a good cristmas reader though. i recomend the book the genius files by non other than dan gutman. typed from my kindle
