Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–A simple rhyming text in large print presents a white middle-class family preparing for Christmas with relatives and friends: "Tree is trimmed,/lights are dimmed./Prayers are said/and carols hymned." The focus is on togetherness and appreciation of the true meaning of the holiday as the real gifts. Attractive, boldly hued watercolors frame each page with a different seasonal motif, perfectly complementing the text. A comforting, cozy lap or bedtime read-aloud.–M. W.

More About the Author

Coming this October is Susan Heyboer O'Keefe's adult debut novel, FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER, a tale of violence, passion, revenge, and redemption that continues the dark story of Mary Shelley's creature. Susan's first title was the bouncy, best-selling counting book ONE HUNGRY MONSTER. Sandwiched between these two very different books are twenty years of bunnies, eggplants, cemeteries, nuns, mysteries, comedies -- and more monsters.

A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Susan grew up in a town so small that not even people in the next town over had heard of it. (Amazing but true.) She now lives in another small town, which a visitor from Manhattan once described as the "end of the world." Since you might be eaten by bears trying to find it, she recommends that you visit her at her bear-free website at www.susanheyboerokeefe.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tight Rhymes, A Sense of Calm, December 28, 2006
By
This review is from: Christmas Gifts (School & Library Binding)
Large print, greatly detailed pictures, rhyming progress of the text lends anticipationg and structure to the often "gimme" oriented Christmas preparations. This would be a good one to read in Sunday School to kids in elementary school to remind them that Christmas is about love and family, togetherness and the gifts of love, not the gifts from WalMart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holiday (High)lights, December 12, 2004
This review is from: Christmas Gifts (School & Library Binding)
[This review first appeared in the "Ephrata (Pa.) Review."]
A short, rhyming text--"Steeple bells, cooking smells. Stories Uncle Eddie tells"--and richly hued watercolors of heart-warming scenes express the season's traditional highlights--decorated house, Christmas Eve anticipation, presents to unwrap, church service, baking cookies, enjoying friends and relatives.
Young children will enjoy paging through this book as they prepare for the season's events, or to review them afterwards.
