uplifting tale,
This review is from: The Christmas Hope (Christmas Hope Series #3) (Hardcover)
In spite of their love for one another the death of their son Sean at eighteen threatens to kill the marriage between social worker Patricia and pilot Mark Addison as she has not been able to move on and he can no longer take it as he has grieving to do too. He is leaving her, but she fails to even react to that missive.Five years old Emily Weist's mother died in a car accident; currently she resides with nice foster parents, but they are leaving town to say their good-byes to his dying father. With no place to put Emily except in a group setting, Patricia decides to bring the little girl to her home for Christmas breaking every rule of the Department of Family Services. Instead of leaving as he planned at that time, Mark pitches in with caring for the little girl. Soon the miracle of Christmas brings these three lost souls together along with an adopted newborn as a loving family with hope for the future. Donna Van Liere always provides an uplifting tale and her fans will celebrate her latest holiday good cheer. The people starring in THE CHRISTMAS HOPE seem genuine as each struggle in their own way in a world that seems so filled with misfortune at least for them until they connect over on Yuletide season. As with the CHRISTMAS SHOES and THE CHRISTMAS BLESSING, this is an inspirational tale that gives hope for all even when life seems out of control and so dark that no light is imminent. A sweet novella that will tug on all the right heart-strings,
By FaithfulReader.com (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Christmas Hope (Christmas Hope Series #3) (Hardcover)
New York Times bestselling author Donna VanLiere's THE CHRISTMAS HOPE is a heartwarming story that is sure to become a holiday favorite for fans of the seasonal sentimental novella genre. In the first tearjerker of the series, THE CHRISTMAS SHOES, the young, impoverished Nathan Andrews buys a pair of shoes for his dying mother. The second, THE CHRISTMAS BLESSING, follows Nathan as an adult in medical school, and coming to grips with his bitterness over his mother's death. In THE CHRISTMAS HOPE, Nathan plays a minor role. The focus is on social worker Patricia Addison and her estranged husband Mark, a pilot who is ready to leave their marriage. Grief over the loss of their college-aged son has created an impassable gulf between the two. Can anything bridge the gap? Patricia is called to help with five-year-old Emily, whose mother has been killed in a car accident, leaving her an orphan. She takes Emily home with her for the holidays, although technically it breaks the rules of her employment. With the almost impossibly sweet Emily in the house, Mark and Patricia find the coldness between them start to thaw, and soon it appears that their marriage --- and healing from the grief and bitterness over their loss --- is possible. This is a tug-at-the-heartstrings, break-out-the-Kleenex kind of story. Readers will weep over the feisty two-year-old Mia, found in her crib by police after her drug-addicted mom leaves her in an unheated apartment for days without food or water while selling drugs. Muses Patricia, "How many times did I drop a child off at a foster family's home a few days before Christmas because his mother was arrested or put back into rehab? I've traveled these roads many times..." About Christmas, Patricia sighs: "Somehow I got old and the wonder was lost." Emily's ability to get the couple talking about the loss of their son and talking to each other will melt the heart of even the toughest reader. And Emily's precocious concern for Mia (who develops heart trouble) in the midst of Emily's own devastating circumstances will remind readers that no matter what our circumstances, we can reach out and care for others. Like almost all Christmas novellas, a happy ending is welcome and inevitable. At last, through her experiences with Emily, Patricia finds that although she once believed there was no hope, "now I know that hope is alive." Although VanLiere does a good job moving back and forth between points of view, there are a few mechanical problems in the novel, including the author's penchant for stringing consecutive sentences together starting with the word "I" ("I pull out onto the road. I glance...I turn up. I smile. I drive..."). The way VanLiere ties Nathan into the story with Patricia will challenge readers to suspend disbelief. And VanLiere doesn't leave it to the reader to draw conclusions; she makes sure you get her points. "God is always speaking. We are the ones who are hard of hearing. God is always patient, waiting for us to believe. We are the impatient ones, demanding to be convinced." She tends to tell, instead of show, in various places ("Mia had no idea she was so sick.") For some readers, these sort of deliberate statements will be welcome; others may wish for more subtlety. Nevertheless, this is a sweet novella that will go over well for readers who want an escapist read for the holiday season. Fans of the first two books will find this fare much to their liking. For those unfamiliar with books one and two, THE CHRISTMAS HOPE can be easily enjoyed as a stand-alone tale. --- Reviewed by Cindy Crosby. Contact Cindy at [...].

A POIGNANT READING OF THIS TUG-ON-YOUR-HEARTSTRINGS STORY,
This review is from: The Christmas Hope (Christmas Hope Series #3) (Audio CD)
No other time of year is as filled with hope as Christmas. With this, the third book in her inspiring series, Donna VanLiere reminds us that faith can overcome the greatest heartbreak and that love does, indeed, conquer all.Patti Addison, a social worker, is married to Mark, a pilot. Their marriage, if not broken, suffers due to the loss of their only son in a car accident four years ago on Christmas Eve. Joy is no longer a part of their lives, and the holiday season is especially painful. Well trained, Patti knows that social workers should not become personally involved with those they help, but Patti forgets this and brings home Emily, a sweet five-year-old who has no place to live. It is through Emily, who has a firm belief in heaven and angels, that Patti and Mark find happiness again, the joy that a true Christmas can bring. VanLiere, joined by Oliver Wyman, gives a poignant reading to this tug-on-your-heartstrings story. - Gail Cooke

love, hope and renewing faith..................,

This review is from: The Christmas Hope (Christmas Hope Series #3) (Hardcover)
Donna VanLiere brings a wonderful and heartwarming tale to life in her third book in her "Christmas" series. When a family tragedy becomes a wall between Patricia and Mark Addison and their marriage slowly and quietly disintegrates. It takes a small, desperate child and the mysterious hand of God to gently weave hope and meaning back into their lives. This is a story of people perceiving their prayers as going unanswered and their lives become void of meaning. Donna VanLiere shows us that God is always talking and guiding us, but often we are not really listening from inside our cocoon of sorrow and disappointment. This a touching story of love and hope and finding faith.

Christmas is a time for miracles,
This review is from: The Christmas Hope (Christmas Hope Series #3) (Hardcover)
The Christmas Hope is an inspirational story and a tear-jerker. The belief that God is there for all to turn to and that miracles do happen is the theme of the story. I cried almost throughout this whole book. It is heart-breaking to lose a child (it is painful to watch a child when he/ she is sick). The way that the author depicted how Sean was when he was a little boy, running everywhere and so excited about Christmas, brought my boys to mind. The gentle way that Emily was showed the difference between boys and girls. I prefer the rowdiness of boys. Also, when Sean told his mom that he would love her always even once he was in high school again brought fresh tears to my eyes. Sons tend to put moms on pedestals. Because of the love I have for my sons (and the pain I have felt because my youngest was so sick in the past months), I could understand Patricia's 'lost hope'. I've felt that, too. However, with this little book, 'The Christmas Hope', I could see how faith and belief in God can bring a person through the darkest night.I would recommend this book to everyone, especially ones who have lost hope.

I Keep Coming Back!,
This review is from: The Christmas Hope (Christmas Hope Series #3) (Hardcover)
This is a re-read for me. I read it every few years to remind me to enjoy Christmas and life for the right reason instead of allowing myself to get caught up in the drama that so frequently unfolds.

The Christmas Hope Series by Donna Van Liere are extremely sad, not unlike life. Although sad, they are equally spiritually uplifting and encouraging. I enjoyed this third in the series as much as the first two. Ms. Van Liere has a unique way of infusing deep spritual concepts that are expressed in her characters. Her story-lines have the ability to soften hearts. Every character touches the lives of other characters - none with too small or too great a roll. Cudos to another great book Donna Van Liere.

Another wonderful book by this gifted author as we follow the life of the young man who bought Christmas shoes for his Mother so many years ago so she would look beautiful "when she met Jesus" Now he is a Doctor and we continue to see him touch the lives of so many others.
