Robin McGraw's book "Christmas In My Heart & Home" is a strickingly beautiful book with many full-page or half-page pictures of Mrs McGraw at home in various "Christmasy" scenes. All the pictures are great and we could all wish that we had Robin's perfect teeth, skin & hair and the money the McGraw's have to buy all these wonderful decorations and household items. So much for the good aspects of the book.

*******ALERT - I'M GOING TO DISAGREE WITH BASICALLY EVERY OTHER REVIEWER OF THIS BOOK. LET THE HATE-FILLED COMMENTS COMMENCE!!!**********

On the flip side, this seems to me like a quickly-produced, table-top book with generic, large-text paragraphs, and strikingly little actual content. The opening pages talk about Robin's wish to share her holiday traditions. Well I think there is one recipe and it's basic, basic - something that any cook would have in her recipe box. The stories are also very few. I think all the text put together would cover MAYBE 1-2 pages.

I love Christmas as much as anyone - probably more. I wanted to like this book and specifically requested to review it. It's beautiful and I'm sure Mrs. McGraw is a wonderful person - this is not personal. However, this book is basically something you will "read" once and never look at again. The only people this MAY appeal much more to are die-hard fan's of the the McGraw's (which appears to explain much of the 5-star reviews) and even then it's hard for me to imagine that this book won't just gather dust because there is nothing in here that you'll want to refer back to or read again.

I hate to really pan someone's product, but this is nothing special. At least it's less than $15.00 on Amazon...

"Christmas in My Home and Heart" could have been written by a ghost writer who compiled a list of general holiday tips. The lavish, opulent home of the author seems offensive when coupled with her text about understanding pinching pennies or suggestions to go to a thrift store.

Some of her advice/anecdotes have charm but it is so densely buried in common sense, ordinary and not even well conveyed tips that it gets lost.

I liked her advice for holiday parties of "only invite people you like and not anyone from a sense of obligation" or her anecdote about giving her children large gifts and leaving them in the garage and trailing ribbons to their rooms. That's fun.

I couldn't even guess who I knew who would want this book for free after I finished it, it was that charmless. I'm going to donate it to one of the thrift stores she recommends.

Dr. Phil, love him or hate him, is a bona-fide phenomenon. If you've wondered if the axiom "behind every great man is a great woman" is true, this book tries to prove it. Robin McGraw shows her own personality and beliefs in this Christmas book. The important details seem to be here but the whole book seems oddly impersonal and on some level it's difficult to get engaged in this book. There are many pictures of Mrs. McGraw, some with her pooch, some with her holiday decor, one in an apron, and only one family photo that looks as if it was taken years ago judging from the age of the McGraw children. There's just nothing to get that excited about. Honeybaked ham sandwich recipes aren't really print-worthy, and the other tips are banal at best. If this book was on an EKG monitor, it would be close to flat- lining. Her final chapter about her belief in God is personal and strong. It's the saving grace of the book, and the only spark that came across. I'm not sure if this is a self-help book, a female empowerment tome, a holiday memory scrapbook, or a Christian book. I'm still baffled, but I can't be a Scrooge and give this book a bad rating. However, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a huge Robin McGraw fan.

The photography is absolutely stunning in this book, including a dozen or so of the author. The decorations are amazing, especially the one of what I presume is the McGraw family main entrance with staircases going to either side, their railings covered with pine and ornaments. There are also some good ideas in here. But that's about it.

This isn't a recipe book, for there are only two recipes in it. It is not a religious book, for there are only four paragraphs of any substance devoted to God or Jesus. And it's not really a practical book for me or for people I know. There are plenty of suggestions, but most are either obvious, impractical, or not within my means. A much better book of suggestions is Life's Little Treasure Book of Christmas Traditions, which, at three inches by two inches, is significantly smaller and has less photography. I think that book is better, cheaper, and much less self-indulgent, which, I'm sorry to say, "Christmas in My Home and Heart" felt to me.

Another perspective: I shared this book with a friend, who loves making Christmas crafts. She makes pillows, sews clothing, has painted an entire Christmas village of little buildings and--well, you get the idea. She loves Christmas. She lit up when I showed her this book. Five minutes later, though, she handed it back to me. "Not for me," she said.
