5.0 out of 5 stars A memorable and engaging Christmas collection
Leon Redbone's voice is so distinctive, and he has created a wonderful collection of Christmas favorites, all in his unique bluesy style. This is one that I've had in vinyl for many years and I'm so delighted to see it in a CD format. Yule love this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars a Redbone white Xmas
Leon Redbone's self-contained mystery as a wink from American classic music 1800's 1900's and stopped somewhere about the time of motorcars and musicals made a mark. The grumble and grin of his Xmas CD is at once old and new. As always, Leon strings and sings like Grandpa sittin' by the fireplace and the kids rollin' their eyes thinking,"What the Hell?".and then the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic guitar Christmas music!, December 5, 2003
By
This review is from: Christmas Island (Audio CD)
If you love acoustic guitar music, take a listen to this. The duet with Dr. John on "Frosty the Snowman", never a song that I loved, is unbelievable. I'm not a cat lover (in fact, I'm a dog person!), but take a listen to "Kitty Cats' Christmas". It's just great music. There are a variety of instruments on the different songs: harmonica, upright bass, dobro, violins, banjo, drums, percussion, didgeridoo, trumpet, piano and sax. Then there's Leon's voice. I love it.

How'd you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? How'd you like to spend the holiday away across the sea? How'd you like to hang your stocking on a great big coconut tree? This CD will take you there in the song, "Christmas Island". Highly recommended for acoustic music lovers.

I had the first version of this CD but just had to buy it again for the extra track. This CD is always in heavy rotation at home and at work over the holidays. It really is a marvel. Warm, quiet, and ever so slightly droll -- what more can you want for holiday music?

4.0 out of 5 stars And Now For Something Completely Different..., October 17, 2001
This review is from: Christmas Island (Audio CD)
Released by Private Music in 1989 (after being first issued by August Records), Leon Redbone's Christmas CD gets yet another chance with Blue Thumb. My advice? Get a copy while it's still in print. Redbone's vocal stylings are such that you'll either love him or loathe him. I find his singing infectious and it works marvelously on this holiday offering. Especially charming is his vocal duet on "Frosty the Snowman" with Dr. John, who also plays piano on many of the tracks. In addition to accompanying himself on guitar, Redbone is joined by other musicians playing banjo, accordian, slide guitar, violin and clarinet to wonderful effect. While I still listen to bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Nat "king" Cole's "The Christmas Song" along with the other holiday standards, Redbone's music is a refreshing alternative to the Christmas mix. There is much to enjoy here. RECOMMENDED

This CD is definately one of my Holiday favorites - right up there with a warm fire and eggnog!
From the first time you hear it, Leon's engaging confidant delivery makes every one of these songs sound like a Christmas classic you've known all your life.
When friends are over for the Holidays and this CD comes on they always smile and ask who it is - a collection to be comfortably enjoyed by all, a true Holiday Delight!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever Without Bing, December 8, 2001

For my money, this is the best Christmas album of all time that doesn't have Bing in it. Just Dr. John's piano solos are worth the price of admission. Then add Leon's timeless, groaning vocalizing (puts you somewhere between the Mississippi Delta and some lazy tropical island -- Christmas island?), the nicely sparse arrangements, and the great song selection (not a dud in the bunch), and you're talking Christmas Nirvana!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent recording, talented musicians, my kids ask for it!, December 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Island (Audio CD)
This CD has been a favorite of my family's for several years now. The recording quality is excellent and backup musicians are very talented. I have purchased this CD as a gift for many good friends. I especially like "Home for the Holidays." It is a CD that both children and adults can enjoy with a jazzy more modern flare applied to the classics by some very talented musicians. I highly reccomend it!

This is one of the best Christmas albums I've heard. Leon's relaxed and mellow style is just what you'll need to help you unwind after a hard day of shopping. I especially like the duet with Dr. John on "Frosty the Snowman". If you're a Leon Redbone fan, you won't want to miss "Christmas Island"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, November 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Island (Audio CD)
I am a natural christmas music lover but this is my favorite christmas album of all time. I look forward to listening to it each year. I happened across this album one day a few years back and was amazed to realize that this was the artist that my parents used to listen to on vinyl when I was 4 or 5. I had remembered his voice all these years but never knew who he was! I do now though and I am glad to see there is still a good selection of Redbone tunes out there. Get this album-you won't regret it!
