Unlike the over-ladled sentimentality of two-bit frauds like Donny Osmond or Kathie Lee Gifford, Jorma Kaukonen, the brilliant guitarist for the legendary acid rock band Jefferson Airplane, and later Hot Tuna, has given us a nice, enjoyable Christmas record. It's very simple, and definitely worth the money. If you're an Airplane/Hot Tuna fan, don't miss it.

Jorma scores with an intimate, relatively mellow Christmas CD--a welcome contrast to the over-produced silly stuff many artists put out for the holidays. This CD features a nice balance of instrumental and vocal music, delivered in his signature straightforward style. Only Jorma could make the holiday blues so appealing. His guitar licks haven't suffered at all over the years, and the down-home ambience makes you feel like you've got a chair pulled up to the fireplace across from Jorma playing.

I bought this CD when it was released in 1996 and it quickly became my favorite Christmas recording. Everything he tries here works, from the tall tale of "Christmas Rule" to the poignancy of "What Child Is This?" to the tough improv of "Holiday Marmalade" (or jam -- get it?). Despite its relaxed ambience, Jorma obviously put some effort into making this one. A labor of love that pays off as a terrific listen from beginning to end, "Christmas" is highly recommended.
