5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Ain't Christmas Without Kitty Wells, November 27, 2008
This review is from: Christmas with Kitty Wells (Audio CD)
Ever the pioneer, back in 1963 Kitty Wells released the first Christmas album by a country female vocalist, "Christmas Day" on Deccca. Decca/MCA however let the original album delete within a few years and never reissued it unlike Loretta Lynn's 1968 album "Country Christmas" which I don't believe has ever been out of print. The good news at least is for at least the last 25 years, MCA has licensed out their Wells' tracks and the recordings have been reissued several times on budget labels albeit not the complete album or original title/cover. Curiously, it's the same nine songs of the original twelve that are repeatedly reissued.

Kitty Wells' brings an down-home old-fashioned sincerity to each track as always. There are surprisingly few standards on the album - "Silent Night", "Away in A Manager", "Here Comes Santa Claus", and "Jingle Bells" although longtime country fans will be familiar with Eddy Arnold's "C-h-r-i-s-t-m-a-s" and Gene Autry's "Old Kris Kringle". Among the 'new' songs is a ballad about one of the other reindeers, "Dasher with the Light Upon His Tail", "Santa's On His Way", and an effective country number in the
'blue Christmas' tradition, "Christmas Ain't Christmas Anymore". Christmas will, however, always be Christmas as long as you have the great Kitty Wells bringing her own brand of holiday warmth.
