Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The second installment of Stone's Bad Boys series (after The Summer He Came Home) is a heartwarming and intense tale of two lost souls. Raine feels like a mere shell of herself, still mourning her husband, Jesse, a year after his death on the battlefield. She only feels alive when she's with Jake, Jesse's twin brother, with whom she has always had a tumultuous relationship. Tough and handsome, with dark terrors from his own wartime experience, Jake has been quietly in love with Raine for years. Now Raine and Jake are pulled to one another, but they must battle their internal demons and intertwined secrets before love can overcome their shared grief. Readers will enjoy the passionate interludes, feisty protagonists, and smalltown charm. (Oct.)

After reading the synopsis I thought I knew what I was in for. A small town widow finds love with the brother of her dead husband during Christmas time. Unfortunately it just ended up not being at all like I thought it would.

Sigh. This is just one of the most depressing Christmas novels I have read in quite a while. I think there was only about 5% of happiness in the entire novel. We have a widow, Raine, that can’t seem to get over her husband’s death and yet also has feelings for his brother (and yes I did find that a bit creepy). Then we have the brother, Jake, who is also not over his brother’s death and what happened to them while they were in battle. At the same time he has feelings for Raine but doesn’t want to. Then we have a secret Raine is keeping from Jake that may change the way he feels…

That is not what I was hoping for here. I wanted a happy, uplifting romance that would put me more in the Christmas mood. This just did not happen. The only reason I kept reading this book was because the writing style was so good. I am not kidding, even as depressing as I found this story it was the way the story was presented that kept me reading.

The Christmas He Loved Her is the second book in the Bad Boys of Crystal Lake series. I know that it does work as a standalone because I haven’t read the first book and I never felt lost during the story. I am really on the fence about going back and reading the first book or any upcoming in this series.

Christmas He Loved Her what a fabulously written love story. It was a heart wrenching, painfully honest look at what a soldier and his family goes through when he comes home with PTSD. Yet, in this story it is even worse. Jake was in battle with his fraternal twin brother Jesse who dies in the battle.
And leaves behind Raine the woman they both loved so very much. You see the twins were a part of the group the Bad Boys that were well known in the small town of Crystal Lake. There was Jesse, Jake, Mac and Cain and one extra member that was an orphan that they all took under their wing, Raine.
She did everything with the boys and she was just one of the guys. Until the day she married Jesse. Then, both the Edwards, boys went to Afghanistan and left her a widow. In their sorrow Jake and Raine turn to each other after the funeral and then puff he is gone for over a year and a half now he is home and the anger they both have has to be worked through or can it? Will the love they once had for each other win out? They will struggle together to find out what it is that happen there on the battle field and here at home to make it all so bad.
I loved this soul searching, heartfelt, painful, loving, and tearfully happy Christmas story. One that will stay with me for a while. One that makes us forever grateful to the men and women that serve in the arm forces. For all that they live through and for all that they have to see there and then again and again her in their nightmares. I pray for your peace, joy and love that you mind, body and souls can heal that you too like this story can heal with a happy ending. I thank the Author for a wonderfully written story with a joyful ending if they all could end so well. This is some of the most heated up, hottest, sensual, emotionally binding sex scenes in a long time that it is gut wrenchingly hot. Be warned ladies and gentlemen. Provided by Netgalley.com

I felt that this author really "got it" in writing about the grief the widow felt, of what the brother went through losing his twin, the parents grieving, etc. These parts of the book were well written I thought but as another viewer wrote this book is not your typical Christmas book. There was something about Jake & Raine that came across as being incestuous. I just couldn't get into Raine loving both brothers and Jake marrying his brother's widow. Had just a bit of eck factor to me. Then the fact of brothers serving in the same unit. I asked dear hubby and he said that the military does not allow that. I liked the book but just couldn't get into Jake and Raine as a couple and wasn't rooting for them to work things out.

It has taken Jake Edwards a year and a half to return back home to idyllic Crystal Lake after his twin brother, Jesse was killed in action overseas. Jake had been part of the same unit and survived, but there were days he wished he hadn't. Frankly, he had avoided going home. Too afraid to face the pain in his parents faces, but especially to be confronted with Jesse's widow, Raine.

All Raine can feel is fury, when she sees Jake standing on her front lawn. All this time she never heard from him, she needed him and he wasn't there for her. Yet there is part of her that can't help being relieved he is here. Losing her husband and having his brother, her best friend, disappear from her life permanently, would have devastated her beyond repair.

The past year and a half has done damage to everyone. Raine is is a mere shadow of her former self, functioning only to appease the outside world and to take care of her grieving in-laws, but barely cares to take care of herself. And pain and guilt have become so overwhelming for Jake, that he has completely shut off from everyone, attempting to hide in work.

But when Jake's father becomes ill, and Jake finally returns home and is confronted with his parents and Raine, he realizes that he is done hiding. Buying and restoring an old local home is a catalyst for the reparations to be made in his life. With life long friends, with his parents and most importantly, with Raine, who he's loved all his life. She can see the monsters that haunt him and won't rest until they're gone, and there is only one way left for them to go........forward.

**********

OMG..... Within a few pages I could feel myself getting emotionally yanked into this story.
