If you remember the 4-record Lawrence Welk Christmas set that Reader's Digest issued in 1969/1970, then the release of this CD is a welcome development. While "22 Merry Christmas Favorites" is a terrific CD, I've spent years wondering how on earth they could leave off Jo Ann Castle's rip-roaring honky-tonk piano rendition of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". This CD remedies that omission and brings you several steps closer to having all of the songs that were included in that LP set.You should also get "Jingle Bells", which features several alternative (though perfectly legitimate Lawrence Welk) recordings, as well as a few Welk recordings that aren't readily available anywhere else on CD. Then you'll need to hope for one more release to fill in the rest of the gaps, or, ideally, a CD release of the 4-record set itself. In the meantime, this CD is a must. If it contained nothing other than "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and 45 minutes of Lawrence Welk talking about life in North Dakota, it would be well worth the price. But this one is solid from top to bottom.

I bought the original 4 record set of this music over 35 years ago! It has been a tradition to play the music while decorating the tree. I made cassette copies for my daughter when she moved away on her own----even to England. She has kept up the tradition to this day. We were concerned about the longevity of cassettes, so were SO anxious to see if this 'wunnerful' music was available on CD. Imagine my extreme thrill to find it on your website!! I ordered this and another CD for her and myself. Now we can be assured of listening to his fantastic music for many years to come. What memories flood back!! No one plays Christmas music like Lawrence Welk! THANK YOU for making this available.

I bought this CD as a gag gift for my Mom. She hates Lawrence Welk because she was forced to watch it with her family as a kid. I had to listen to it before I gave it to her to see what it was like. I ended up keeping it because I liked it so much. It's one of my favorite Christmas CDs. I especially like the Lennon Sisters. The version of "What Child is This" is kind of annoying and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" makes me feel like I'm in an insane clown nightmare....but everything else is great. It's super corny nostalgia, which is exactly what I like in Christmas music.

Very Nice, Older Styled Christmas Music And Singing,

This is a nice cd filled with christmas songs that are performed in a nice and often orchestra led musical setting with some great vocal work in a choir type setting, soloists, and duets. The style is mostly that of the orchestra/chorus style of the 1950's or 1960's so it has a nice old style to it which is what christmas music really is supposed to sound like (to my liking anyway) and not any of the modern stuff nowadays. This wil bring you back to christmases of yesteryear. It contains several songs from an lp set and/or several different lp's from the 1950's and/or 1960's.
The best song is probably I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS wich counds like something MITCH MILLER or FRED WARING AND THE PENNSYLVANIANS could have also done. You will also get some different but still old styles such as a ragtime version of SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN. Although 22 MERRY CHRISTMAS FAVORITES is easily the best christmas release of LWARENCE WELK, this is still very recommended for that nice christmas sound. |
