Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hoping for the normal life she was denied as a child of the streets, school nurse and social worker Mallory Phillips has moved to quiet, charming Chandlerville, GA, for a fresh start and the Christmas she’s always dreamed of but never had. When motherless seven-year-old Polly Lombard shows up at her house in the middle of the night hiding near the Christmas tree, Mallory knows she needs to help, whether Polly’s recently widowed and still grieving EMT fireman father, Pete, likes it or not. As she works to help Polly, Mallory helps Pete with his grief as well. Still it isn’t until Mallory finally comes to terms with her past that she finds love and acceptance and truly “comes home.” VERDICT: Issues concerning mothers and daughters, family, and grief are at the heart of this intense, heart-wrenching, yet uplifting romance that would make a solid book club choice. DeStefano (Secret Legacy) lives in north Georgia.

This is the third or maybe fourth book I have read this holiday season that surrounds Christmas and I am certainly not complaining. I am sure that I will be reading many more! I was very drawn in by the cover of this book simply because who wouldn't want to wake up to this on Christmas morning? It looks almost like the sun is breaking through the clouds on the cover as well. This book also surrounds the feeling of Christmas and truly captures that loving and giving spirit that most people experience throughout the holiday season.

This story follows a few different families that are living on Mimosa Lane, what a quaint street name! Each of them is feeling lonely or missing someone or some feeling this Christmas season. They are all trying to enjoy a Merry Christmas, but certain circumstances in their lives have left them empty in some way, shape, or form. I loved the way that Anna DeStefano connects each of the families on the lane and allows their stories to intertwine as well. I felt like I had moved onto Mimosa Lane myself and was part of this tight knit neighborhood.

My favorite story on the lane was the story of Pete, Mallory, and Polly. Pete and Polly have just lost their wife and mother recently and Polly, still in Elementary School, is having an extremely hard time coping. Just the thought of a small girl without her mother made me tear up while reading because I could never imagine life without my own mother, and I am a grown woman. Polly was such a loving and sweet little girl who was drawn to Mallory, their new next door neighbor, and her beautifully lit Christmas tree. Polly would often sneak out of their house and Mallory would find her lurking around her backyard or right in her living room!

I was looking for a sweet Christmas novel to lift my spirit this holiday season. This was not it. I tried to ignore the poor editing/proofreading, such as typos in the character's name (Malloy instead of Mallory and Mai instead of Mal). I tried to get past how overly verbose the prose was (such as when a character knocks on a door, and you have to read another page of what he's thinking before he enters the room). The final straw for me was when I realized that every day this holiday season, when I finally had some free time to relax and read, I was actually dreading going back to all the drama--the nonstop grief and personal angst these characters wallowed in right up to the last page. So, based on the reviews, some people really like heavy, psychological dramas for the holidays, but I just want people to know what's in store for them in this book.

Not your typical romance. Many issues that are handled honestly. Great read. I was extremely touched by the emotional depth.

This book is brilliant. The characters are so real and I cared about them as if they were real. I cried some and I smiled a lot off and on throughout the book. The main character's personal brokenness: can she overcome it or will it keep her always longing but always apart? It doesn't have to be Christmas to read this book; the people and the feelings are real any time of the year.

After a childhood on the streets with her bipolar, alcoholic mother, Mallory Phillips learned never to trust in love. Now she found a community to call home, but she can't settle into the cozy town. When Polly Lombard sneaks into her house late one night, Mallory finds herself connecting to the young girl who just lost her mother to cancer. She's also finding herself bonding to Polly's grieving father, Pete. But can this family and the community give Mallory the one thing she always wished for... A perfect Christmas?

This is my first book by DeStefano, but it will not be my last. This story, written with heart and clever psychological depth, had me weeping one second and smiling the next. Most impressive was that the book was broken into three sections to adapt to phases of healing. This wasn't a rushed love story with a Christmas angle. Nothing felt out of place or unrealistic. And every character jumped off the page. From the secondary characters to the town itself, this was an engrossing read. This is an author to keep your eye out for, and stock up on Kleenex.

I liked the story as it seemed true to a real life circumstance and it had a HAPPY ending! Having lost my daughter-in-law 2 years ago at age 42, who left a 6 year old daughter for my son to care for, it was very dear to my heart. I highly recommend this book!

I get the two broken people getting together theme but both the male and female leads were so unlikable. The hero' s daughter is so upset over her mother's death she is refusing to eat. The school nurse (the heroine) notices the weight loss and sneaks in cheese sandwhiches to her. Wouldn't she be contacting the father about his child's declining health? The little girl sneaks over to the nurses house to see her tree and she gives her a bowl of sugary cereal which the little girl wolfs down and when the dad comes over he freaks on the nurse when sh learns she has been giving her those sandwhiches and the cereal, yet in the same breath he acknowledges she pretty much has stopped eating. REALLY, he is worried she had a few empty calories when she is so messed up she is slowly starving to death. I think there are more important issues to worry about than junk food. I tried to read some more (about a third of the book) but the the pair was so annoying I gave up.
