I bought this to test mini-light strings when one section of the string's lights is out. I start with the first unlit bulb, hold the tester end (black end) up to it, press the red button, and if the led light comes on and stays lit, that bulb is good. By skipping along among the remaining unlit bulbs and repeating this , I can quickly find the one that's bad (the led light does not stay lit). To verify it's bad, I stick the removed bulb into the tester, which should light the bulb if it's good. Great tool for a low cost -- lowest cost one I could find on the internet. Incidentally, my order was received within three days of placing it -- great service.
