Book Description

3 and upP and up
Filled with the wonderful traditions of Christmas, this story is a poetic, holiday twist on a favorite rhyme!

This is the house where the children slept.
This is the snow that fell on the house
where the children slept.

This is the Christmas story that takes the framework of "This Is the House That Jack Built" and constructs a wonderful story of the magic of Christmas Eve. The rhyme builds up to the climax of Christmas morning and wonderful presents to open. With its repetition, the text is fun to read aloud; and the gorgeous illustrations perfectly capture the wonder of Christmas!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K–This cumulative tale, fashioned after "The House That Jack Built," takes place on Christmas Eve ("This is the snow/that fell on the house/where the children slept"). The story line is predictable, until the halfway point, when Saint Nick delivers his presents to a sleeping family. The artwork then draws attention to an eye peeking out of a package. A turn of the page reveals that it belongs to the Rat King from the Nutcracker, who leads his pack and kidnaps the Christmas doll in the stocking next to them. A Nutcracker and other toys come to the rescue, so that all is back to normal by Christmas morning. This is a clever way to introduce some classic stories, and the narrative has enough action to hold children's attention. The warm, fuzzy '50s cartoon watercolors complement the text. Use this titlefor preschool storytime or as a lap-time read-aloud.–M. W.
