Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3–'Twas two weeks before Christmas and Mama, Papa, Mimi, Momo, and Baby Mousekin busily prepare for the holiday by selecting a tree, writing letters to Santa, baking cookies, caroling, and other traditional activities. The bustle of the season is captured in this sampler format, which includes crafts, recipes, poems, and Nana Mousekin's Christmas Eve story. The colorful, cozy artwork is filled with intricate detail that will appeal to the very young. The crafts, many of which require tracing of small patterns and recipes that involve baking, are geared for older children. Best for parent or teacher use with small groups.Madeline J. From Booklist

The story, in which a mouse family begins to prepare for Christmas two weeks before the holiday, is almost beside the point in this cheerfully illustrated, enjoyable package of celebratory ideas. Projects range in complexity from simple ones—such as making paper snowflakes—to complex activities, including actual baking. Adult assistance will be needed for most, especially those that involve the oven; the requisite admonishment to “Be sure to have an adult help you in the kitchen” is present. The cheerful text and busy, colorful illustrations combine for a charmingly old-fashioned overall tone. The mouse father is “Papa”; the snowy village has gingerbready houses and a general store. The folkloric design features red borders decorated with white swirls, hearts, and snowflakes on activity pages; gift-ribbon wrapping around a series of vignettes on one spread; and so forth. Even if the illustrated finished projects look much more perfect than a real kid’s ever would, the Mousekins’ merrymaking is contagious, and the activities look like fun. Grades K-3. --Diane Foote

More About the Author

I enjoy inhabiting the child's world - especially between the ages of two and six when so much is magical and exciting. My stories spring from strong memories and feelings from my own childhood in a small New England town where craft and creativity were the norm. In my illustrations I try to create colorful and warm inviting worlds with expressive characters that draw readers in. Most of my books have lots of details to engage the curious minds of little ones and so that with repeat readings they can always find something new - this is the kind of book I loved as a child. My favorites were by Richard Scarry, Arnold Lobel, Cindy Szekeres, and Maurice Sendak - especially his early tiny pen & ink drawings for books written by Ruth Kraus.

In my adult life I have lived in New York City, Larchmont NY, coastal RI, Providence RI, Los Angeles, Austin and Seattle. Currently I live in Long Beach CA, a block and a half from the beach. Life is always interesting and ideas for books are always springing!

Every single page of this wonderful book is endearing and delightful-- the sweetest Christmas book ever! Maggie Smith's mice are adorably charming, and every detail in her warm and cheerful illustrations conjure up favorite Christmastime memories. Leafing through the pages, you can practically smell the Christmas tree and cookies in the oven. There is a sweet humor here, too... I love Daddy Mouse's natty wardrobe and the sideline comments of the little ones. And of course I must mention the recipes for Gingerbread Mice and Cinnamon Snails, which I tried... this a deliciously interactive book, too! Illustrated directions for Christmas crafts add even more fun to the story line. I highly recommend this book to help cheer up anyone's Christmas... I will certainly be sending it to every child on my list.

I absolutely fell in love with this book! Christmas with the Mousekins is so charming, so full of family love and holiday fun activities. Every page overflows with wit and whimsey and good cheer. Sledding and skating and baking and craft making and carolers' Christmas songs - it's a Mousekin world that throws its arms around you, inviting you in to be part of their holiday celebration.

Maggie Smith's book is a delightful holiday story. I have been charmed - and you will be too! And you'll find that you want to visit with Nana and Mama and Papa and Mimi and Momo again and again, year after year. This book is timeless and the perfect holiday gift!!

My 3 year old daughter and I purchased this book this Christmas and what a delightful surprise it has been. The pictures are enchanting; we could pore over each detail for hours. We made the gingerbread mice from the recipe in this book and were so pleased with the way they looked and tasted. We have also made some of the paper crafts and can't wait to do more. The Mousekin family and their sweet family Christmas is what I aspire to in our own family. What a perfect book! I know we will enjoy this one for years to come.

We have a tradition of reading a Christmas book every night before bed in December- so we have alot of Christmas books. Christmas with the Mousekins is one of our absolute favorites. The illustrations are darling- so much detail and we always seem to find something cute each time we read it. The pages are full of recipe and craft ideas that are adorable and do-able! It's so nice to be able to read the book and be able to work on a craft the next day from the book- our favorite is the Angel Mouse tree topper- so cute and fun. This is a must buy for every Christmas book collection!

I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old daughter and it has been her number one favorite story all year long. She pours over the illustrations of the Mousekin family and examines every detail over and over again. We both love the endearing tale of the christmas fun shared by the Mousekin family. We have baked up many batches of the cinnamon snail cookie recipe and are looking forward to trying the craft projects that are part of the story. I imagine this book will be a favorite for my daughter for quite a few years to come. This book would be a great gift for any family with small children. The story, illustrations, recipes, and craft projects are just lovely.

My children and I love this sweet, Christmas book. The Mousekins are busy preparing for Christmas, and along with a wonderful story, this book also includes the recipes for the goodies they make, and instructions for decorations.
We would borrow this book from the library every year, and finally just bought our own copy, because we love it so much!

"Christmas with the Mousekins" is a great children's Christmas book. This 10 3/8 inch by 10 1/4 inch book has 32 pages with many beautiful full color illustrations. Each illustration contains many details which will fascinate the younger reader. There are ten pages filled with all kinds of Christmas craft projects with complete instructions. Some of the projects included are Victorian Cornucopia Christmas tree ornaments, cut out snowflakes, Mittens and Christmas Tree garland streamers, Christmas tree hat, Cinnamon Snail and Gingerbread Mice Cookies, a Christmas Mobile, Sock puppet, Mitten Bookmark and an Angel Mouse Tree Topper. Children will love to do these activities with adult supervision. In addition to the various Christmas craft ideas there are several really neat rhythmic Christmas poems.

Children will really enjoy celebrating Chrisrtmas with the Mousekins. The reader will accompany the Mousekins as they search for a Christmas tree and bring it home on a sled. Nana Mousekin comes to visit the Mousekins over the holidays and helps celebrate Christmas by baking and decorating and telling a story of how Papa Mousekin was lost in a snowstorm and was rescued and brought home by Santa Mouse. I really like the part of the book that shows the Mousekins sharing their baked cookies with neighbors and others. The reader will enjoy sledding and skating with the Mousekins as well as baking cookies and preparing Christmas dinner.

While this book is a great Children's book, I am disappointed with its lack of any mention of the true spiritual significance of Christmas.
