Although Gretchen is a self-proclaimed "Redneck Woman", this Christmas collection is actually a nice blend of country twangs and tranditional productions. "The Christmas Song" for example, is rich with jazzy piano and quite the vocal showcase.

"I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" is the best song on the album and the only notable cover of the classic song. It's beautifully honky tonk while still being faithful to the original.

"Santa I've Been Naughty" is a great original track and definitely a highlight.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is another vocal spotlight and quite charming. It's one of my personal favorites.

The others are good too. In fact, the only dud goes to "Nuttin' for Christmas" which is about 98% annoying and 2% cute.

OVERALL: Although I love country music from time to time, sometimes mixing the genre with traditional Christmas carols can be a bad move. Fortunally the productions here maintain a solid sense of classic holiday atmosphere, with just the right touch of signature Gretchen. Her vocals shine throughout many of the tracks and her irresistible attitude makes an appearance as well. I give it a solid recommendation!

I picked this up on a whim, and over all, I'm glad I did. This adds a Honky Tonk twang to our christmas carols. It's a refreshing touch to them. A lot of the time, we get a "traditional" version to the songs, and it's the same ole, same ole. Not with this, this is a toe tapping charm. My favorite is I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas. I've always loved that one. I have to be honest, Nuttin' For Christmas grated on my nerves.

Overall, bottom line, I like it. If you add this to your Christmas Collection, you won't be sorry.

For this album, Gretchen chose three original songs, three oldies that are rarely recorded these days, and four Christmas classics that everybody knows.

Of the original songs, I particularly like Christmas in my heart (a love song) and If you see Rudolph (about a child worried about him being shot). I wonder why Gretchen chose to record both Santa I've been naughty (the other original song, which also sounds great) and Nuttin' for Christmas (which is an oldie from the 40's or 50's that I've heard a few times, but only by artists of that era). Two songs about being naughty might lead us to believe that Gretchen has been up to something, but I won't ask. :-) Let's just hope that Santa is lenient on her.

It was great to find Gretchen reviving Have a holly jolly Christmas, originally recorded by Buel Ives, and more recently by Alan Jackson. She is in fine form on this, as she is on the standards, not forgetting I want a hippopotamus for Christmas - another song that I am familiar with, but which I thought was destined to remain an oldie.

This is a wonderful album by an artist whose music I haven't bought before because of personal circumstances, but I'll look forward to hearing some of her other music eventually.
