I must confess that I am an easy mark when confronted with baroque splendor--trumpets and drums, etc. I also love baroque music based on Lutheran chorales. This recording has both and it has cheered up my holiday season considerably. The composer is usually thought of as a historically important figure, but negligible as a creator. The two works on this CD show him to be very skilled--the music tells the story of Christmas with arias and choruses sometimes commenting on the action and sometimes completing the narrative. The Magnificat complements the story very beautifully. Performance is enthusiastic and heartfelt.

This is another in a fine series of releases from CPO exploring the works of the largely unknown baroque composer Johann Mattheson and it does not disappoint. CPO, however, persists in its rather annoying habit of failing to release an on-line list of the CD's track titles. Can we get a list please?

You can audition this excellent recording on YouTube. It's quite a beautiful, well-structured piece, which includes several settings of "In Dulci Jubilo." One is reminded more of Handel, whom Mattheson knew, than of Bach, whose music he also knew and reviewed. (Mattheson's "Christmas Oratorio" predates Bach's, incidentally.)
