Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Christmas Party is a wonderful story and at times a bit intense! But, I believe it's a good read and there's even a hint of romance! When I started writing The Christmas Party I hoped to one day see it published and I'm thrilled to see that dream come to fruition!

About the Author

Chari Davenport was born in Denver, Colorado. She enjoys reading mysteries and has always dreamed of writing a novel. Chari holds a BA and MS in Communications and hopes to one day complete a Ph.D. Chari is a divorced parent and says her greatest joy is raising her daughter. “I’ve always been a writer, even as a child I used to write and illustrate short stories. I’ve been reading mysteries since I could read a book. I started with children’s mysteries then moved on to more challenging material. I read them all and one day I decided to try my hand at writing one and I’m glad I did!” Chari’s novel, The Christmas Party is the first in what she hopes will be a successful series of wonderful whodunits!

4.0 out of 5 stars Life in the Upper Echelons in Black Society, January 27, 2003

This review is from: The Christmas Party (Paperback)
The Christmas Party is a short novel about murder in upper class America. Craig Akino is wealthy, arrogant and something of a curmudgeon. Akino is so ornery that every year at Christmas he gives a big party for all his family, employees and friends to atone for his bad behavior the rest of the year. Most years everybody takes it tongue-in-cheek. But this year he may have gone too far. It's up to a family friend and retired policeman, Marshall Edmonds, to solve the mystery since the police are happily looking at Nika, Craig's wife as a suspect.

The Christmas Party is an interesting look at life in the upper echelons of Black society. Davenport does an excellent job of creating a believable story of mayhem and murder among wealthy African Americans. There was room for more character development and the novel would have been longer if we had known just a bit more about each of the characters. In all, it was an enjoyable book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curl up and enjoy your afternoon, October 22, 2002

This review is from: The Christmas Party (Paperback)
If you like mysteries and want an enjoyable quick read for one of those wintry afternoons coming up, acquire this book. All the elements for a good mystery are there: the boss you love to hate, the admirable suffering wife, the festive Christmas party that covers underlying tensions, and even the loyal butler. And speaking ot the butler, my favorite character of the whole book is Brumbly (and what a great name that is for him!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Book, October 21, 2002

I enjoyed reading The Christmas Party. It has an interesting assortment of characters, from Brumbly the butler to Troy the wild nephew. If you're in the mood for a murder mystery, check out this book. It has just the right amount of romance and is appropriately set in winter to send an extra chill up your spine! A fun read.
