Book Description

Christmas Past by Susanna Fraser

Time-traveling PhD student Sydney Dahlquist’s first mission sounded simple enough—spend two weeks in December 1810 collecting blood samples from the sick and wounded of Wellington’s army, then go home to modern-day Seattle and Christmas with her family. But when her time machine breaks, stranding her in the past, she must decide whether to sacrifice herself to protect the timeline or to build a new life—and embrace a new love—two centuries before her time.

Rifle captain Miles Griffin has been fascinated by the tall, beautiful "Mrs. Sydney" from the day he met her caring for wounded soldiers. When he stumbles upon her time travel secret on Christmas Eve, he vows to do whatever it takes to seduce her into making her home in his present—by his side.

3.0 out of 5 stars A quick sweet read November 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a really sweet quick read. I am not always into time travel romance, they get too science-y at times. But this was a really nice read. Sure, things take a turn into science-y at the very end, but the real meat of the story already happened so, it was easy to skim.

I really liked Sydney and Griffen getting together, although they seemed to be very naive and trusting folks. If somebody told me they were from the future with a time machine I would need serious proof. It would take a lot to convince me, even then I might still have doubts.

This is a sweet romance with a hint of steam, not one of my down and dirty reads, but a really lovely warm read!

This is a new author for me but I am definitely going to checkout her other books!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet February 12, 2014
By DivaC
Format:Kindle Edition
When a time traveler from the future gets stuck in the past because of a broken time machine, she copes as best she can under the circumstances. She even gets an eventual ally who also learns her secret and basically wants her to stay. Sydney the time traveler was really likeable and you wanted her to get back to her time and if she could take back sexy captain Miles Griffin with her. A nice read with wit and charm and short enough you’ll enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time Traveling Goodness December 28, 2013
By PamM
Format:Kindle Edition
Sydney is on her first journey as a time traveler. She has went back to 1810 to get blood samples and what should be an easy journey has become something more. Her machine has quit working and now she is trapped in that time. She knows protocol says she can't interfere or talk much to the people in the time. It could effect the future if she does. She is supposed to destroy the machine and herself. Miles is a captain with the army and has been keeping an eye on Sydney who he is very attracted to. When he finds her on a Christmas Eve and her time machine he knows he has to keep her for all time his time. He just has to convince her she needs to stay with him and not worry about the future.

This is a short story but I loved it. Sydney is a wonderful character that is torn in many ways. She wants to go home, she knows she should do what she has been told to do in this situation and she also has fallen for Miles and wants to stay with him. I know it had to be hard for her either way she went. Miles is amazing. He is from a time when woman didn't do or act the way Sydney does. He doesn't care but wants her any way. She tries her best to tell him as little about the future as she can but does tell him about her Christmas with her family. He does everything he can to get her to stay. They may be from different times but they are perfect together. If you like a love story, one about time travel or just want a quick great read pick this one up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Past December 20, 2013
By Angie
Format:Kindle Edition
Christmas Past is a delightful holiday novella with a Science Fiction twist! Sydney is a time traveler who studies diseases from the past. On her venture to 1810, her time machine breaks down and she's stranded. According to the Protocol, she's suppose to destroy her time machine (disguised as a wagon) and down a fast acting poison. This is all to prevent changes to the past that may alter the future. However, as Sydney is about to take the pill, Miles Griffin stops her. He's seen the inside of her time machine and the iPad, so he believes her story, but can't bare to let her kill herself. He convinces her to spend Christmas with him, and hopes that he can woo her into staying with him.

I loved the way time travel was explained in Christmas Past. It's a simple explanation, since this is under 40 pages, but it makes sense. Miles understands it, too, for the most part, and why Sydney can't tell him anything about the future. They spend a fun Christmas Eve dinner together with friends, and then get some alone time afterward. Griffin quite enjoys how forward women of the future are. Of course, Sydney decides to stay but not until she realizes something very important about her time machine. I quite liked that little twist, and can't help but wonder: who did it and why?! Dun dun dun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Love time-travel romance & the holiday season? December 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
When it comes to time travel romances there are a lot of places and times I'm just not interested. That almost kept me from reading CHRISTMAS PAST but I'm really glad it didn't. While simplistic and plenty easy to pick apart when it comes to the pseudo-science of it, CHRISTMAS PAST is one of those short and sweet stories I thrive on this time of year.

Sydney is a modern woman trapped in the past when her time machine stops working. She was only there to observe and take samples, time travelers are scientists with a strict code to follow should anything prevent them from returning. Set on following the code to prevent making changes to the past by being there beyond her mission she is discovered by the handsome captain, Miles Griffin. She's been very attracted to Miles and finds that the feeling is mutual. Could sharing one night—a lonely Christmas Eve—destroy the future as she knew it?

Yep, a simple and short story of love discovered under impossible circumstances, on Christmas Eve. It's terrific in that Fraser doesn't dwell too much on the details of the time, nor the details of the science of time travel. She covers just what we need to know in order to understand the situation then focuses the tale on Miles and Sydney. While he's not as well developed as I'd have liked it suits the short format and would make for a nice got-the-shopping-and-wrapping done treat to get you in the holiday spirit.

Notes: ARC received via publisher.

More About the Author

Susanna Fraser wrote her first novel in fourth grade. It starred a family of talking horses who ruled a magical land. In high school she started, but never finished, a succession of tales of girls who were just like her, only with long, naturally curly and often unusually colored hair, who, perhaps because of the hair, had much greater success with boys than she ever did.

Along the way she read her hometown library's entire collection of Regency romance, fell in love with the works of Jane Austen, and discovered in Patrick O'Brian's and Bernard Cornwell's novels another side of the opening decades of the 19th century. When she started to write again as an adult, she knew exactly where she wanted to set her books. Her writing has come a long way from her youthful efforts, but she still gives her heroines great hair.

Susanna grew up in rural Alabama. After high school she left home for the University of Pennsylvania and has been a city girl ever since. She worked in England for a year after college, using her days off to explore history from ancient stone circles to Jane Austen's Bath.

Susanna lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and daughter. When not writing or reading, she goes to baseball games, sings alto in a local choir and watches cooking competition shows.
