5.0 out of 5 stars synbolism a child can understand, December 24, 2009
This review is from: The Christmas Pinata (Hardcover)
I am happy to find this book on Amazon. My daughter just read this book in school and I was very moved by it. The story deals with the concept of mortality in a way that children understand. The little cracked pot is put aside and pines away to be useful and beautiful as the the other pots. He finally gets his moment in the sun as a beautiful Christmas pinata only to be shattered. But the lovely thing about this is that the little pot accepts his place and understands that all things must come to an end and is contented. AND Jack Kent manages to convey this with gentleness, humility and honesty that is truly beautiful. This is in contrast to many children's stories where the damaged or flawed central character is made whole and strong. This story shows us that in the end we are all "used up" and that we can be content with how we have served the world. My 5-year-old loved this story. She understood the sadness but was drawn to the beauty and truth as well.
