5.0 out of 5 stars Two Absolutely Wonderful Neels Christmas Stories ... 5+5x5 stars, August 19, 2008
By
Book Description: A CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL: When Dr. Oliver Hay-Smythe sees how kind-hearted Bertha has been put upon by her family, he decides to sweep her off her feet. --- A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE: When Theodosia's only remaining family lock her out of their seasonal celebrations, she finds that a special love is in store for her this Christmas - in the shape of favourite physician, Hugo Bentinck.

A Christmas Proposal: Dr. Oliver Hay-Smythe first spots Bertha Soames at a party held at her home, on her birthday; oddly enough the party is not for Bertha but for her beautiful step-sister, Claire. At first glance Bertha doesn't merit a second glance from anyone except very handsome and eligible doctor. Oliver is drawn to her; he knows what he wants, and will let nothing or no one get in his way of making Bertha his wife.

A Christmas Romance: Dr. Hugo Bentinck met Theodosia Chapman at St. Alwyn's hospital one morning while resolving a query concerning a patient's diet. Hugo was initially drawn to Theodosia because she was friendly, "treated him like a human being and not like the important man he was"; but it didn't take him long to realize that he loved her. Now he just had to get Theodosia to agree to be his wife.

Both doctors, Oliver and Hugo, see the inner and outer beauty of Bertha and Theodosia, fall in love at first sight, and decide to celebrate Christmas with the best gift they could give themselves ... the gift of very special wives.

Both stories absolutely wonderful, Christmas stories any true Betty Neels fan will love. These are two sweet, gentle stories sure to give Neels fans that warm holiday feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gallant Man, April 25, 2009

This review is from: A Christmas Proposal (Betty Neels Collectors Edition) (Paperback)
This a typical Betty Neels book, I miss her so much. Dr Oliver Hay-Smith fell in love with plain jane Bertha Soames at first sight. She was dressed in a terrible shrimp-pink dress and even though it is her birthday her wicked stepmother makes her look bad, Why? I have no idea, because her stepsister Clare has her birthday on the same day (so much for horoscopes) these two couldn't be more unlike if they tried.
Another question why did Bertha's father not come to her birthday party.
Okay he was in the USA, still with flights coming and going from England and the US he could have been there. But he wasn't. Wicked Mrs Soames makes sure Bertha is mistreated everytime she gets a chance. Yet when Oliver shows an interest in the plain Bertha both Mrs Soames and her daughter plot against Bertha. Even when Bertha sees a woman attacked she runs to the woman's aid, Clare takes the credit for it.
Oliver takes Bertha from the Soames' home as often as he can, only the wicked steps send Bertha to her aunt in Cornwall.
Oliver as all heroes should finds his love, although it takes him a week he will not leave her to the mercies anymore.
From the back of the book:'When Dr Oliver Hay-Smythe sees how kindhearted Bertha's family takes advantage of her, he decides to sweep her off her feet with A Christmas Proposal.'
