Editorial Reviews

It's Christmas time and there's only one thing on Ralphie Parker's Christmas list this year: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot, Range Model Air Rifle, but many obstacles stand in the way of his dream because every adult that he confronts keeps telling him he'll shoot his eye out. Meanwhile The Old Man just got a major award (a lamp shaped like a woman's leg), and Mom is making sure The Old Man doesn't come near her turkey, Ralphie's friend gets his tongue stuck to a flag pole, and Ralphie utters the f-word infront of his father. Christmas is drawing nearer and Ralphie visits Santa at the department store in hopes of asking him for his dream gift. Will he receive it? Let's hope so.

3.0 out of 5 stars 30th Anniversary Edition As Mean-Spirited As Scut Farkus! November 24, 2013
This was the perfect opportunity to REALLY do it right. One of the most beloved holiday movies of all-time was having its 30th anniversary, and there's a huge fanbase waiting and willing to pay for the ultimate in a quality remastering of both the video and audio of A Christmas Story. So what do we get? Some modest tweaks to the mono audio and no video improvements at all. It's such a cynical ploy to re-sell the same movie while making the most minimal effort possible to improve it, that it feels like Scut Farkus just took my money.

While I appreciate the added featurette, this 30th Anniversary Edition could have been and should have been SO much better than this. Obviously, this is a five-star+ movie, but I'm being generous in giving this Anniversary edition three stars for the effort in creating it. Thanks so much for taking the time to read my review, and I hope you find it helpful in making a buying decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same transfer as before, no noticeable improvements November 5, 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I received this yesterday and did a spot check today. The new BD looks to be the same visually as the earlier BD issue. The DTS sound was clean enough, but as the original mono soundtrack isn't exactly a barn burner, there's no great improvement.

I will need to closely watch the entire film again, because to my eyes and ears, the dialogue appears to be slightly out-of-sync with the picture every once in a while. We're talking milliseconds here, but something seemed not right to me. Maybe it was the rum in the egg nog talking. Or maybe it has something to do with the DTS process.

Extras: Being able to access an HD digital version is a plus, and the BD includes a new featurette entitled "Christmas in Ohio: A Christmas Story House," which runs 21:19 and features an all-growed-up Ian Petrella (aka Randy) and Brian Jones, founder of the "A Christmas Story House" in Cleveland. Also, the original recordings by Jean Shepherd that appeared on the 20th-anniversary DVD edition but were missing on the earlier BD have returned. What's still missing are the 20th-anniversary trivia & decoder ring extras from the DVD, which were sort of lame anyway. Watching some of the extras as the participants keep referring to the 20th anniversary of the film (the edition for which the extras were originally filmed) emphasizes how little updating was done for this 30th Anniversary BD Edition.

This 2-disc set includes a DVD as well - it includes both widescreen and full screen versions of the film. The BD contains only the widescreen version. Packaging is a steel book.

Love the movie - I bought this latest issue in the anticipation that I'll be giving my single-BD set away to friends this year (which I did).

If you already own this on BD, you need not double dip.

5.0 out of 5 stars 30th Anniversary A Christmas Story Blu-ray November 7, 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
According to my receiver this newest released version (Nov 5, 2013) of "A Christmas Story" on Blu-ray's audio is in one channel DTS Master HD. I do notice an improvement in the sound vs. the 2008 "A Christmas Story" on Blu-ray, however it IS still showing only in mono like it did in 2008 (rats). I enjoyed the added extra feature showcasing the house in Cleveland, OH and gift shop and museum! Go see this house in Cleveland, OH - you'll love it if you love the movie! I couldn't believe how the street today looks like it does in the movie, with the exception of the neighboring house missing now (burned down, they say) and some minor painting and minor landscaping changes on other neighboring houses! Kudos to those involved in refurbishing that house! - This is being posted on Nov. 7, 2013.

3.0 out of 5 stars Timeless movie, Anniversary Blu-ray nothing special December 27, 2013
By Rob S.
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I have to agree with a few of the other reviewers with respect to expecting more from the 30th Anniversary blu-ray edition. It's really not that much better than my dvd version from 10 years ago. The audio is a bit better, but I really wish they would have remastered the video and added even more bonus features that haven't been seen before. The tin case is a nice touch though.

This is a 3 star release of a 5 star movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic package and bonus features November 30, 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Wonderful bonus features, including the commentary by Bob Clark and Peter Billingsly was awesome, loved learning new things about the movie that I've watched since the 80s.

My blu-ray arrived today, and I was very excited to watch it, as this is a daily movie for our family during the Christmas season...and the english version of the blu-ray does not play. Spanish versions both worked fine, but the english on the main feature was absolutely silent. I did play the DVD disk and it worked, and the bonus features worked fine, so I wonder if I somehow got a defective disk. Amazon is overnighting me a replacement so we'll see if that fixes the problem or if it remains on the new disk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic I Will Always Love April 19, 2014
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Updating DVD to Blu-ray is a process, but I'm definitely glad I finally did with this film. When I learned about this steelbook edition coming out because of the anniversary, I knew I had to have it. I'm so glad that I bought it, because the steelbook art is amazing and worth the buy (I got it for $13 something). I watch this movie every Christmas, usually on TV because of the 24 hour marathon..but it's nice to have a hard copy in case I want to watch it a different time of year.

Has this BD been remastered?
From what I hear, it's the same as the previous release, only that the audio has been upgraded to lossless DTS and two bonus features were added:
1. Christmas in Ohio: A Christmas Story House
2. Two radio readings by Jean Shepherd of the stories the movie was based on (The Red Ryder Story and... Read more
