5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding educational tool - fun for kids, May 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: What Would Jesus Do? (Hardcover)
My children (8 and 10) and I read this book every night over a couple of weeks. It is designed to be read one chapter at a time with a lesson and related Bible chapters for discussion at the end of each. The kids were intrigued by the fictional story and couldn't wait to read the related Bible chapters. They enjoyed it so much that we started reading it again this week. We only wish there were more books like this available!

5.0 out of 5 stars "In His Steps"--Todays English Version., May 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: What Would Jesus Do? (Paperback)
Mr. Sheldon's Grandfather's book is a classic of Christian fiction, but dated. In it, the main evil in town is "The Saloon," and a girl shows great character by withstanding the temptation to go to the big city and become an opera singer. Still, its central message is very important and needs to be communicated to Christians, especially our children. "WWJD" does a great job of taking the message of "In His Steps," and making it relevant to today's kids. Instead of the opera, the girl's temptation is Hollywood and a role in a titillating action film. Drugs replace "The Saloon." Furthermore, "In His Steps" did not depict a concerted backlash against the minister by more stodgy members of his congregation. "WWJD" acknowledges this as an inevitability. All in all, a fine update of a wonderful story. I recommend that Christian families with teens should read this book together and have a round table discussion after every few chapters. It is thought provoking and challenges the Christian reader. For younger teens (middle school), "The Experiment" by Todd Temple runs in a similar vein.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless and Up-to-Date, August 11, 2004
By
This review is from: What Would Jesus Do? (Paperback)
A re-write of his great-Grandfather's timeless classic, "In His Steps" first published In 1896, this story stands solidly beside one of the simplest, yet most life-changing works of fiction ever written.

I dragged my heels for months before reading this, because I had the very intense feeling that nobody should tamper with the original. Yet this has brought the original home to new generations of readers, losing almost nothing in the transition -- a task I would have thought impossible.

The question posed in the original book has launched several generations of reechoing "What Would Jesus Do?" In this re-write by great-grandson, Garrett Sheldon, the story remains true to the original and just as life-changing.

The very simplicity of the story has blinded some to the depth of the message, but after more than 107 years and 50,000,000 copies of the original and now with updated examples and characters it continues to rank among the best books ever written.
